Sholing 0 : 2 Torquay United

Sholing’s hopes of reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history were ended as fifth tier Torquay United showed their superior quality to progress through.

The Boatman, who are currently in the Southern League Division One South, gave the National League leaders a real run for their money but were left feeling what could have been, after being on the receiving end of some controversial decisions

Asa Hall’s penalty just before the interval gave the visitors the lead before Josh Umerah’s second-half strike ensured Gary Johnson’s side made it into the first round for the third consecutive season.

The home side had some chances throughout the game and they will feel unfortunate that they weren’t awarded a penalty when Dan Mason’s header was blocked on the line which appeared to be by a hand.

Moments later Dave Diaper’s team felt they should have been given another penalty, claiming Claudio Herbert was tripped in the box.

Although they put on a eye-catching display, the home side struggled to create too many problems for Shaun MacDonald in the visitors’ net but can pleased with their run in the competition which saw victories over Bemerton Heath, Fairford Town, Saltash United and Walton Casuals.

Johnson’s side will now look ahead to tomorrow evening’s draw, when the League One and Two clubs join the competition where they could draw face some former winners of the competition in the shape of Portsmouth or Wigan Athletic.

As for Sholing they have no time to think about what could have been, with Frome Town the visitors to the Mackoy Stadium on Tuesday evening.
