Lavelle the “Queen of Queens” as Gotham defeat Spirit

FLUSHING, NY–Before the second-largest crowd in NWSL history, A Rose Lavelle goal was enough for Gotham to defeat Washington Spirit before 42, 175 at Citi Field. The Spirit miss a chance to go top of the NWSL table, while Gotham are now level on points with the Spirit, just one point behind San Diego, though fourth in the table based on goals scored.

The match’s only goal came in the 37th minute. Gotham’s press forced a turnover from Hall Hershfelt and Lavelle  lofted on over the head of Sandy MacIver and into the net. Despite outshooting Gotham, 18-9 (9-4 on target), but were unable to breach Ann Berger’s net.

Gotham currently have the league’s stingiest defense allowing just eight goals so far all season. Next up for Gotham is a Saturday matinee hosting Seattle Reign (noon ET, ABC/ESPN app), while Washington will travel on Sunday to Boston Legacy (7pm ET, Victory+).
