Gotham FC 1-1 Portland Thorns

HARRISON, NJ–Gotham FC’s unbeaten streak has now reached double digits after a 1-1 draw with Portland Thorns on Friday night. Gotham’s lead at the top of the NWSL table is six points over San Diego, who leapfrog Portland for second after defeating Racing Louisville on Friday.

The match was billed as a battle between two of the best strikers in the game–Sam Kerr for Gotham and Sophia Wilson for the Thorns. Kerr had the first chance between the two in the 22nd minute, but the shot was snagged by Mackenzie Arnold. Arnold would make five saves on the night for the Throns.

Of course, Gotham isn’t just about Sam Kerr. Jaedyn Shaw would open the scoring at the hour mark catching Arnold off her line and scoring from 35 yards out to make it 1-0. Portland would equalize from the penalty spot after VAR captured Laura Howell fouling Petra Torbin in the box. Wilson would send Ann-Katrin Berger the wrong way and equalize in the 75th minute. It was Wilson’s eleventh goal of the season.

It would be honors even at the end as Gotham maintain their unbeaten streak.

Gotham travel to Denver to take on the Summit on Sunday, September 6th (2pm ET, CBS/Paramount+), while Portland will host Washington in the second half of CBS’s doubleheader that day (1pm PT, CBS/Paramount+).
