DC United 2-1 Red Bull New York

WASHINGTON, DC–DC United converted from an early spot kick and doubled their lead on the brink of half-time. Red Bulls found a goal back after a DC dismissal but it was too little too late for the visitors.

A foul by Adri Mehmeti gave DC United the chance to take an early lead from the penalty spot. Tai Baribo who won the penalty, converted it, coolly slotting into the bottom right corner.

Throughout the first half, Red Bulls created numerous chances pushing for an equalizer, it would be the hosts that would find a second goal however. With seconds left in the first half, a corner routine found the head of Silvan Hefti who nodded in from close range. This goal was a real sucker punch for Michael Bradley’s side right before the break.

Emil Forsberg would go close after his introduction, forcing Sean Johnson into an unorthodox save to deny the 34 year old.

Just over 20 minutes into the second half, DC were reduced to 10. Lucas Bartlett was shown a second yellow card for delaying the restart. This gave New York a real opportunity to find a way back into the game.

Just three minutes after the red card, Red bulls would have their goal back. The substitutes combined as Forsberg slipped in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who rounded the keeper and tapped into an empty net.

This was the former Swedish international’s eighth assist of the season.

Immediately after the goal, Cameron Harper had a wonderful chance to level the game. The 24 year old raced through on goal but tried to square it to Choupo-Moting. Unfortunately for him, it was cut out by Sean Nealis.

It was looking like a game for the substitutes as Forsberg played in Harper over the top who used everything to reach the pass, sliding in with his effort agonizingly coming back off the inside of the post.

With seconds to go Choupo-Moting had a chance but his header was comfortably  claimed by a relieved Johnson in the DC United goal.

It just wasn’t their night in the end, the ball just would not go in the back of the net.

New York will now return back home to face Toronto FC on Saturday, October 17

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on Apple TV in English and Spanish.
