Haaland Brace Helps Norway Survive Late Sarr Rally in 3-2 Win Over Senegal

East Rutherford, NJ- The Norway National Team battled to a 3-2 victory over Senegal in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage match on Monday afternoon.

The match kicked off at MetLife Stadium to a sold-out crowd of 80,000.

Norway had the first chance of the match in the 2nd minute when Kristoffer Ajer’s header was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy.

In the 13th minute, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken was forced into his first substitution of the match, replacing Julian Ryerson with Marcus Pedersen.

Martin Ødegaard had a massive chance less than a minute later, but his effort from inside the box sailed just over the bar.

Senegal’s first major chance came in the 27th minute when Nicolas Jackson’s effort from inside the box sailed just over the bar.

Martin Ødegaard had a glorious opportunity to score in the 37th minute when Erling Haaland laid the ball off perfectly for him, but Ødegaard’s effort was saved by Édouard Mendy.

Entering the 43rd minute, Norway took the lead.

Midfielder Martin Ødegaard played a ball forward toward Erling Haaland that was initially intercepted by Kalidou Koulibaly. However, Koulibaly’s clearance fell directly to Marcus Pedersen, who took a touch and buried his effort past Édouard Mendy to make it 1-0 to Norway.

Erling Haaland had an unbelievable chance to score in the 45+3 minute when he intercepted a poor touch by goalkeeper Édouard Mendy; however, his effort toward the wide-open goal struck the post.

Prior to the start of the second half, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made his second substitution of the match, replacing Fredrik Aursnes with Patrick Berg.

The second half kicked off with Norway immediately launching the ball into Iraq’s defensive third, looking to pin their opponents back and apply early pressure.

Entering the 48th minute, Norway added to their lead.

Midfielder Martin Ødegaard played a through ball to Erling Haaland, who produced a first-time finish to make it 2-0 to Norway.

Nicolas Jackson had a huge opportunity in the 51st minute, but his header toward goal was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

Entering the 53rd minute, Senegal pulled one back.

Following a ball played into Sadio Mané, the Senegal forward laid it off perfectly for Ismaïla Sarr, who took a touch, was brought down, and still managed to flick the ball into the top corner to make it 2-1.

After the goal, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw made his first two substitutions of the match, replacing Pape Gueye and Hadji Diouf with Ibrahim Mbaye and Ismail Jakobs.

Entering the 58th minute, Norway added to their lead.

Marcus Pedersen laid the ball off toward Erling Haaland; however, Haaland collided with teammate Antonio Nusa, and Senegal’s attempted clearance fell to Patrick Berg, who centered it back to Haaland for a bar-down finish to make it 3-1 to Norway.

In the 63rd minute, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw made two more substitutions, replacing Édouard Mendy and Lamine Camara with Mory Diaw and Pathé Ciss.

In the 72nd minute, both teams made changes. Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw replaced Kalidou Koulibaly with Pape Sarr, while Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken replaced Antonio Nusa with Andreas Schjelderup.

Senegal had two chances to score in the 82nd minute when Ismaïla Sarr’s bicycle-kick attempt fell for Nicolas Jackson, whose follow-up effort was denied by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

In the 84th minute, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made his final two substitutions, replacing Alexander Sørloth and Torbjørn Heggem with Oscar Bobb and Leo Østigård.

Norway should have had a fourth goal in the 89th minute when Oscar Bobb’s effort from six yards out was blocked off the line by Pathé Ciss.

Entering the 90+3 minute, Senegal pulled one back.

Following a cross into the box by Moussa Niakhaté, the ball fell to Nicolas Jackson, who laid it off for Ismaïla Sarr to finish and make it 3-2.

Senegal had a massive chance to level the scoreline in the 90+8 minute when Ismaïla Sarr’s header sailed just over the crossbar.

Following 90+9 minutes of action, Norway held on for the 3-2 victory.
