FC Dallas win homecoming match over Sporting KC

FC Dallas 4-3 Sporting Kansas City

FRISCO, TX–It had been May 13th since FC Dallas last played a home match at Toyota Stadium. They had been on the road for a while, while the stadium has been undergoing renovations. The homecoming came with a crazy 4-3 victory over bottom side Sporting Kansas City and a return to the top four in the Western Conference.

In the first twenty minutes, though, the visitors were two up. Taylor Calheira opened the scoring in the fourth minute pouncing on a rebound after Capita Capemba’s original shot was saved by Jonathan Sirois. In minute 20, Ramiro Benetti was caught in possession and with Sirois in an outside position, Stephen Afrifa had an empty net to double Sporting’s advantage.

FCD would pull one back in the 27th minute after pressure by Logan Farrington forced Stefan Cleveland off his line to confront him and the former would put it in the back of the net to make it 2-1. Three minutes later, Petar Musa would head in a cross from Bernard Kamungo to level the score. Just before halftime, the hosts would take the lead as Farrington fed Kaick who score from 25 yards out to make it 3-2.

Sporting would push for an equalizer and would get one in the 78th minute as Calheira scored his second of the night heading in a cross from Kwaku Agyabeng. It looked like Sporting would get a rare point away from home, but into stoppage time, VAR determined that Petar Musa was tripped on the line of the penalty area which resulted in a penalty kick. Musa converted the spot kick to give FCD the lead and eventually the win.

Musa has tied the club’s single-season record for goals scored as well as tie Lionel Messi for the lead in the Golden Boot race with 18 as Messi did not score in Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with Atlanta. However, he also was nursing a shoulder injury and an MRI will be taken this week.

“Musa, we don’t know yet,” said FC Dallas head coach Eric Quill. “Obviously, we all saw him carrying a shoulder injury for the last eight minutes of the game. That is concerning. We’re concerned, and we’re going to get MRIs and try to think positively and not take our minds to a place we don’t need to go. I’m going to let the doctors do what they do best. I’m going to pray for him, and we’re going to hope that we have him available Wednesday night.”

Wednesday night, Dallas will go back on the road to face Minnesota United. Kickoff is at 7:30pm CT on Apple TV. Sporting will look to rebound on Saturday when they face LAFC at home (7:30pm, Apple TV).
