Revolution Unable to Capitalize on Man Advantage in 1-0 Loss to Charlotte FC

FOXBOROUGH, MA –New England Revolution (8-1-5, 25 pts.) were defeated 1-0 versus Charlotte FC (6-3-6, 21 pts.) on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium to a crowd of 14,000.

New England Revolution players and staff held up Luca Langoni’s jersey before kickoff after the winger was ruled unavailable for tonight’s match while attending to a personal matter in Argentina.

The match kicked off with Charlotte FC passing the ball back from the center circle as they sent the ball into New England’s defensive third.

Charlotte had the first chance in the 4th minute when a free kick routine by Ashley Westwood was played to the top of the box and laid off for Pep Biel, whose effort was sent wide of the net.

In the 13th minute, Charlotte FC defender David Schnegg was issued a yellow card for fouling winger Peyton Miller.

The ensuing free kick fell to Alhassan Yusuf, whose effort was deflected twice before being cleared away.

Entering the 15th minute, Charlotte FC took the lead.

Following a combination play, the ball fell to forward Idan Toklomati, whose right-footed effort snuck into the bottom-left corner to make it 1-0 to Charlotte FC.

Will Sands had New England’s first opportunity on goal in the 23rd minute when his long-range effort sailed comfortably over the crossbar.

Less than a minute later, Dor Turgeman had a chance of his own when his headed effort was comfortably claimed by goalkeeper Kristian Kahlina.

In the 26th minute, Revolution defender Peyton Miller was issued a yellow card for allegedly catching forward Wilfried Zaha high in the face.

Wilfried Zaha had a massive chance just three minutes later when his right-footed effort from inside the penalty area was denied by a diving save from goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Peyton Miller had New England’s next chance in the 31st minute when his low-driven left-footed shot slipped just wide of the net.

Carles Gil had a chance of his own from a free kick in the 35th minute, but goalkeeper Kristian Kahlina made a diving stop to deny him.

Charlotte had a massive chance to score in the 40th minute when a corner kick delivery into the box was met with a bicycle kick clearance off the line by defender Mamadou Fofana.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with Charlotte FC ahead 1-0.

The second half kicked off with New England controlling possession from the center circle and working the ball through midfield.

Charlotte FC had the first chance of the half in the 56th minute, when Pep Biel’s effort was sent high over the bar.

Less than a minute later, Charlotte FC defender David Schnegg was issued a second yellow card for fouling Peyton Miller, forcing Charlotte to play the remaining 33 minutes with 10 men.

Peyton Miller then had a chance to level the scoreline in the 58th minute when his left-footed shot forced a save from goalkeeper Kristian Kahlina.

Less than a minute later, Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith made his first substitution, replacing forward Kerwin Vargas with defender Andrew Privett.

In the 62nd minute, Revolution defender Mamadou Fofana was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul on forward Wilfried Zaha.

Less than three minutes later, entering the 65th minute, Revolution defender Ethan Kohler was issued a yellow card for fouling forward Idan Toklomati.

Pep Biel had an effort toward goal just two minutes later, but it snuck wide of the left post.

Less than a minute later, Revolution defender Brayan Ceballos was issued a yellow card for fouling forward Wilfried Zaha just outside the penalty area.

In the 74th minute, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his first change by replacing defender Ethan Kohler with winger Griffin Yow.

In the 79th, both teams made changes. Marko Mitrović replaced midfielders Diego Fagundez & Matt Polster with midfielder Eric Klein and forward Marcos Zambrano. Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith replaced forward Idan Toklomati with midfielder Brandt Bronico.

New England’s next chance came in the 80th minute when Griffin Yow’s effort toward goal was deflected away for a corner kick.

Pep Biel had a massive chance to score in the 82nd minute, but his breakaway effort was denied by goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Peyton Miller had a curling effort toward goal less than a minute later that snuck just wide of the right post.

In the 85th minute, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović replaced defender Brayan Ceballos with winger Cristiano Oliveira.

In the 87th minute, Charlotte FC head coach Dean Smith replaced midfielder Djibril Diani and forward Pep Biel with forward Archie Goodwin and midfielder Luca de la Torre.

New England had a chance in the 90th minute when a delivery into the area by midfielder Carles Gil was misplayed by forward Dor Turgeman and winger Peyton Miller, resulting in a goal kick.

Kristian Kahlina made two massive saves in the 90+2 minute, denying Will Sands and Marcos Zambrano inside the six-yard box.

After the 90+3 minutes, the match concluded with Charlotte holding on for the 1-0 victory.
