Red Bull New York 1-1 Chicago Fire FC
HARRISON, NJ–Cameron Harper’s first goal of the season earned his side a valuable point as Red Bull New York shared the spoils with Chicago Fire FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The first half was pretty uneventful from a RBNY perspective, only having two shots on goal and going in to the break a goal down. Maren Haile-Selassie gave Chicago the lead with a wonderful curled effort from the top of the box that nestled into the top right corner, leaving Ethan Horvath with no chance.
The Red Bulls goalkeeper did have a solid game in-between the posts, making four saves and keeping his team in the game.
Jonathan Bamba came very close to doubling the lead for Gregg Berhalter’s side, but Horvath got down to stop him.
It looked like it was going to be another one of those days for the Red Bulls, with the introduction of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to try and rescue something from the game. The 37 year-old striker looked to be the one that was pushing for an equalizer, getting a couple of shots off but failing to trouble Chris Brady.
Eventually, Michael Bradley’s side would find their leveller through some great work by Choupo-Moting, The former Bayern Munich man threaded his way through the defense and floated a cross in that was powerfully headed in by Cameron Harper.
It was a long awaited goal for the forward, who netted his first of the season and a very important one at that.
After picking up a long term knee injury, Harper said, “This is just another checkpoint in my return, just to get a goal. And honestly, just to check that off is just a crazy good relief, and yeah, I’m kind of on the come down right now, but it was just everything I could ask for.”
That draw ensures New York maintain a five-match home unbeaten run against Fire.
The Red Bulls will play on home soil once again, when an in-form Philadelphia Union are in town on Saturday, August 29 at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on Apple TV in English and Spanish.
