Haaland Brace Sends Neymar and Brazil Crashing Out of World Cup

East Rutherford, NJ – The Norway National Team battled to a 2-1 victory over Brazil in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at MetLife Stadium to a sold-out crowd of 80,000.

The match kicked off with Norway immediately launching the ball into Brazil’s defensive third, looking to pin their opponents back and establish an early foothold in the match.

Entering the 13th minute, Brazil were awarded a penalty kick after forward Vinicius Junior was fouled inside the penalty area by Kristoffer Ajer.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães stepped up to take the penalty, but his effort was saved low to the bottom-right corner by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

Rayan had the next opportunity for Brazil in the 16th minute when his right-footed effort from the right side of the box sailed wide of the net.

Danilo had the next chance in the 31st minute when his right-footed shot from the right side of the box sailed wide of the left post.

Vinícius Júnior then had a chance just two minutes later, but his effort missed just wide of the left post.

Martin Ødegaard had Norway’s first major chance of the match in the 35th minute when his left-footed shot from inside the box missed just wide of the right post.

Two minutes later, Erling Haaland had his first chance of the match when his left-footed effort from the center of the box was saved by Alisson in the top-right corner.

Brazil had the final two chances of the half when Bruno Guimarães’ right-footed shot was blocked, and Matheus Cunha’s effort drifted wide of the right post.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with Norway ahead 1-0

Prior to the start of the second half, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made two changes, replacing Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sørloth with Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup.

Brazil opened the second half on the front foot, quickly pushing the ball into Norway’s defensive third as they looked to apply early pressure.

Martin Ødegaard had the first chance of the half in the 49th minute when his right footed effort from outside the box went over the bar.

In the 58th minute, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti made his first change of the match, replacing Matheus Cunha with Endrick.

Less than a minute later, Endrick had his first effort of the match when his left-footed shot from inside the box missed just wide of the left post.

In the 63rd minute, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made his third change of the match, replacing Julian Ryerson with Fredrik Aursnes.

Erling Haaland had the next chance for Norway in the 67th minute when his left-footed shot from inside the six-yard box missed just wide of the right post.

In the 68th minute, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti replaced Rayan and Gabriel Martinelli with Danilo and Neymar.

Andreas Schjelderup had a massive chance to score in the 75th minute when his right-footed shot from inside the box was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Alisson in the bottom corner.

Entering the 79th minute, Norway took the lead.

Midfielder Andreas Schjelderup swung a cross into the penalty area, where Erling Haaland rose highest to head the ball past goalkeeper Alisson and give Norway a 1-0 advantage.

Following the goal, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti made his final change of the match by replacing Bruno Guimarães with Éderson dos Santos.

Neymar had the next chance for Brazil in the 84th minute when his right-footed effort from a difficult angle on the left side of the box drifted wide of the left post.

Entering the 90th minute, Norway added to their lead.

Midfielder Andreas Schjelderup found forward Erling Haaland, who then elected for a right-footed strike that snuck into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1 to Norway.

Éderson had the final chance for Brazil in the 90+4 minute when his effort towards goal was blocked away and cleared.

In the 90+5 minute, Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken made his final change of the match by replacing David Møller Wolfe with Leo Østigård.

In the 90+6 minute, Brazil midfielder Neymar was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 90+6 minute, Brazil were awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the box.

Midfielder Neymar stepped up and buried the penalty into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-1.

Following 90+11 minutes of action, Norway held on for the 2-1 victory.

Brazil have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
