RIFC cruise to first win of the season after 3-0 victory over Oakland Roots

SMITHFIELD, RI– Rhode Island FC (1-1-2, 4 pts) was victorious 3-0 over Oakland Roots SC (0-1-4, 0 pts) on Saturday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 4:00 p.m. ET at Oakland Coliseum.

The match kicked off with Rhode Island FC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Oakland’s left flank.

In the 6th minute, RIFC forward JJ Williams was issued a yellow card.

Oakland had the first chance of the match when a headed effort by Peter Wilson in the 13th minute was met with a catch save by Koke Vegas.

Less than 5 minutes later, Wolfgang Prentice had a chance of his own for Oakland when his chipped effort went into the side netting.

In the 29th minute, Oakland Roots defender Kai Greene was issued a yellow card.

Rhode Island’s first major chance came in the 30th minute when a freekick by JJ Williams went just wide of the net.

RIFC had yet another chance in the 38th minute when a flicked header by Albert Dikwa was caught by goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.

Entering the 40th minute, RIFC took the lead.

Midfielder Jojea Kwizera managed to win the ball on the left flank and sent a cross into the area to find forward Albert Dikwa for the simple finish to make it 1-0.

Entering the 42nd minute, RIFC added to their lead.

Following a long distant strike by Noah Fuson, the ball was saved by goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. The rebound fell kindly for Clay Holstad who finished his chance bar-down and in to make it 2-0 to Rhode Island.

Entering the 45+4 minute, RIFC added to their lead.

Forward JJ Williams rounded the keeper near midfield and tapped in the simple finish to make it 3-0 to Rhode Island.

After the initial 45+6 minutes, the match entered halftime with Rhode Island ahead 3-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, Oakland Roots head coach Gavin Glinton made his first change of the match by replacing Panos Armenakas with Jose Sinisterra.

The second half began with Oakland Roots starting from the center circle and swiftly advancing the ball into the Rhode Island’s defensive third.

Rhode Island’s first chance came in the 50th minute when Albert Dikwa’s volley attempt was met with a catch save by goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.

RIFC had yet another chance in the 57th minute when Noah Fuson’s effort was cleared off the line.

In the 59th minute, Oakland Roots head coach Gavin Glinton made his second and third changes of the match by replacing Jurgen Damm & Julian Bravo with EJ Johnson & Bobosi Byaruhanga.

In the 73rd minute, both teams made changes. Oakland Roots head coach Gavin Glinton made his fourth and fifth change of the match by replacing Daniel Gomez & Wolfgang Prentice with Ali Elmasnaouy & Justin Rasmussen. Rhode Island head coach Khano Smith made his first change by replacing Clay Holstad with Rio Hope-Gund. This is Hope-Gund’s RIFC debut.

Two minutes later, in the 75th minute, RIFC midfielder Marc Ybarra was issued a yellow card.

Following the caution, Rhode Island head coach Khano Smith made his second change of the match by replacing Albert Dikwa with Aldair Sanchez.

Oakland’s first major chance came in the 84th minute when a freekick effort by Justin Rasmussen went just over the crossbar.

In the 87th minute, Rhode Island head coach Khano Smith made his final three changes by replacing JJ Williams, Jojea Kwizera, & Maxi Rodriguez with Amos Shapiro-Thompson, Joe Brito, & Taimu Okiyoshi.

After the 90+3 minutes, the match concluded with RIFC holding onto the shutout victory.
