Koke Vegas heroics leads to 0-0 draw v Loudoun United

SMITHFIELD, RIRhode Island FC (7-13-5, 34 pts.) drew 0-0 versus the Loudoun United FC (9-7-7, 34 pts.) on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia to a crowd of 4,500.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Koke Vegas starting in the net with a backline of Frank Nodarse (left), Karifa Yao (center) and Grant Stoneman (right). The midfield consisted of Jojea Kwizera (left) Marc Ybarra (left center mid), Noah Fuson (central), Clay Holstad (right center mid) and Stephen Turnbull (right). The forward roles were manned by Albert Dikwa (left) and Mark Doyle (right).

Rhode Island had 4 players out due to injury. They included Zachary Herivaux (Foot) and Isaac Angking (R-ACL).

The match began with Loudoun United starting from the center circle and immediately progressing the ball into Rhode Island FC’s defensive third.

RIFC had the first moment of the match when a corner kick delivery was shot by Jojea Kwizera and saved by goalkeeper #23 Hugo Fauroux.

Loudoun’s first chance came entering the 10th minute when a right-footed shot by winger #10 Kalil ElMedkhar was saved by Koke Vegas.

RIFC had yet another opportunity when multiple chances were saved in the 13th minute.

In the 34th minute, Loudoun United forward #14 Zachary Ryan was issued a yellow card.

In the 42nd minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith was issued a yellow card.

After the initial 45 minutes, the match entered halftime level at 0-0.

The second half began with RIFC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Loudoun United’s defensive third.

In the 54th minute, Loudoun United head coach Ryan Martin made his first change of the match by replacing defender #22 Robert Dambrot with midfielder #30 Abdellatif Aboukoura.

In the 57th minute, RIFC midfielder Jojea Kwizera was issued a yellow card.

Less than a minute later, Loudoun had a major chance when a ball into the area bobbled in the area when winger #7 Wesley Leggett and forward #14 Zach Ryan could not score from close range.

Entering the 65th minute, Loudoun United thought they had taken a 1-0 advantage; however, the ball was called back and the scoreline remained 0-0.

Less than a minute later, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his first change of the match by replacing Mark Doyle with JJ Williams.

Just two minutes later, in the 68th minute, Loudoun United head coach Ryan Martin made his second and third change of the match by replacing forwards #7 Wesley Leggett and #10 Kalil ElMedkhar with forward #18 Pape Wane and midfielder #40 Gavin Turner.

In the 73rd minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his second change of the match by replacing midfielder Stephen Turnbull with midfielder Conor McGlynn.

Loudoun’s next chance came in the 77th minute when a shot by midfielder #30 Abdellatif Aboukoura which was met with a spectacular save by Koke Vegas.

In the 85th minute, Loudoun United midfielder #40 Gavin Turner was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 90th minute, Loudoun United were given a penalty kick due to a foul by Karifa Yao.

The ensuing penalty kick by forward #14 Zach Ryan was saved toward the bottom left by goalkeeper Koke Vegas.

After the 90+7 minutes, the match concluded with Rhode Island drawing 1-1 with Loudoun United FC.

With the result, RIFC remain in 8th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

Rhode Island FC (7-12-5, 33 pts.) returns home to face Birmingham Legion FC (10-5-9, 35 pts.) at Beirne Stadium. The match kicks off on Saturday, August 31st at 7:30p.m. on ESPN+.
