Richie Myler agrees contract to stay at Leeds Rhinos until 2024

Richie Myler has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract at Leeds Rhinos, which is set to keep him at Headingley until the end of 2024. 

A scrum-half for much of his career, Myler initially joined Leeds from the French side Catalans Dragons in 2018 and has since adapted his role to full-back, one of the more experienced players in the Rhinos’ ranks.

Having picked up the Lance Todd Trophy as Man of the Match in Leeds’ 2020 Challenge Cup Final victory, Myler went on to be a key man in his team’s road to the play-offs in Super League last season.

Speaking to the club’s website, the 31-year-old revealed his excitement at being able to sign on for three more years.

 “I am really pleased to have got my new deal finalised and I am looking forward to the next three years.

“There is an incredible family atmosphere at the club, and I cannot wait to be a part of what this group can achieve in the next few years.

“I have been fortunate to play for a number of clubs in my career, but I feel like I have found a home here at Leeds.

“[Head coach] Richard Agar has done a tremendous job of moving the club forward and I am excited to see the strength in depth we have this season within our squad.”

Capped eight times internationally by England, Myler has also played for Widnes Vikings, Salford City Reds (now known as Salford Red Devils) and Warrington Wolves.

Boss Agar – who took charge of the Rhinos in May 2019 – is more than happy that his full-back is now settled at Emerald Headingley alongside his family.

He said:

“I am really pleased for Richie that he has agreed this new deal. He is an important player for us as we saw with his trophy-winning performance in 2020.

“He has evolved into a great team player and a real club man. He has settled into life at the Rhinos, and I know that he calls Leeds his home now. This [contract]is a just reward for his hard work and effort.”

While the positivity around Myler’s contract extension is warranted, Agar and those behind the scenes at the Rhinos will know that there is a lot more work needed prior to the new season if they are to improve upon the last one.

Harry Newman, Jack Broadbent and Alex Mellor all played their part in getting the Rhinos to within one game of the Grand Final last term, but that trio will be free to negotiate deals with other clubs in less than six months’ time if they don’t follow Myler in signing on with Leeds.

It’s understandable that the value of all three players has risen since they last put pen to paper, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if any of them were hanging fire for an increased offer from the Rhinos.

Whoever is in Agar’s squad come the beginning of next season, one thing is for sure and that’s their opening day opponents. Warrington Wolves will visit Headingley on Saturday, February 12, 2022, to get the new campaign underway with a 12:30PM kick-off scheduled.
