The performance was simply brilliant. Picking themselves up from 1-0 down, Mansfield turned things around and beat league leaders Cheltenham Town 3-1.
Jordan Bowery and Jamie Reid got the goals, but a player that has been fantastic ever since he was promoted into the starting XI was Jason Law.
After spending his youth days at Derby County and Burton Albion, the Stags picked up the versatile player from Carlton Town back in 2015.
Jumping right into the Academy, he was a regular in the side that John Dempster managed as the youthful Stags won the EFL Youth Alliance league for two consecutive years in 2016/17 and 2017/18.
In between those title wins, the Nottingham-born player joined Sutton Coldfield Town and Greasley on short-term loans to gain valuable first-team experience.
At the latter club he made 26 appearances scoring three goals in the process as he looked to burst onto the scene and make his debut for the Stags after making a handful of appearances on the bench.
After another loan at Hednesford Town which lasted a month, he finally made his debut against Scunthorpe United in the EFL Trophy in 2018/19.
Playing the full 90 minutes at left-back saw Mansfield Town beat the Iron 3-2 at the One Call Stadium. That cup appearance was the only one he made that season as match opportunities were limited for the then 19-year-old.
In the 2019/20 season, Law would make one more appearance and this would come in the EFL Trophy once more. After a 1-1 draw in normal time, Everton beat the amber and blues 5-2 on penalties as the versatile youngster would only play the first-half of the encounter against the young Toffees.
Another two loan spells to Leek Town and Kettering Town gave the 21-year-old even more experience in non-league as he looked for a way into the Mansfield side.
A handful of substitute appearances early on in the season saw Law ready than ever to take his chance with both hands.
Nigel Clough gave him his chance in the EFL Trophy deploying him as a left-midfielder and using his low centre of gravity and quickness to effect.
The Stags won 2-1 but failed to qualify for the next round of the cup and were knocked out of the competition alongside Scunthorpe United.
Law finally made his first-team debut in League Two when he came on for Stephen Quinn in the 62nd minute of Mansfield’s 3-0 defeat against Cambridge United.
He started the following match against Harrogate Town on the right-side of midfield and was substituted after 74 minutes.
Since then he has made four consecutive appearances in the line-up and has lasted 90 minutes in all four matches. Deployed as either a winger, central midfielder or on the left or right of midfield, the 21-year-old has adapted well to the different systems that Clough throws his way.
The forward was heavily involved in Mansfield’s equaliser against league leaders Cheltenham Town. Stephen Quinn passed the ball onto Law who found Bowery with the Stags’ number nine smashing the ball into the back of the net.
Mansfield’s number 29 was involved in the second goal which put the hosts ahead after 63 minutes. The 21-year-old swung the corner which was cleared by the Cheltenham’ defence only as far as Law. He skipped past the defender and drilled the ball into the box which was eventually fired in by Reid.
After the 70th minute, he looked quite tired but did not give up and gave his all in bringing the ball forward and helping out in the defence with his ability that he has gained at the back.
A much-needed addition into the Stags side that brings energy, needed speed and determination that can be desired by anyone in a Mansfield shirt.
If Law can continue this sort of form, Clough will have a tough decision whether to start him in the front-line alongside Bowery and Reid or play him in midfield alongside skipper Ollie Clarke and the experienced Quinn.
