New England Revolution defeated 2-0 versus Atlanta United in preseason match

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution were defeated 2-0 versus Atlanta United FC on Saturday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 1:00 p.m. ET at IMG Academy.

The match kicked off with Atlanta starting from the center circle. They elected to play the ball backwards to their central center back and began to build up the right side of the field.

Atlanta United had the first chance of the match in the 8th minute when forward Jamal Thiaré chased down a pass-back to goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič. The goalkeeper took a little too long on the ball and end up clearing the ball off of Thiaré and out for a goal kick.

Less than 3 minutes later, Atlanta had yet another opportunity when a cross by Ronald Hernandez was headed down by Jamal Thiaré and caught by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

New England’s first notable chance came in the 24th minute when a cross by Brandon Bye was cleared away for a throw-in.

In the 32nd minute, Atlanta took the lead.

Midfielder Alexsei Miranchuk’s freekick delivery found the diving head of forward Jamal Thiaré for the finish past goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

New England had their next opportunity in the 34th minute when a low-cross by Will Sands looking for Leo Campana was smothered by goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Entering the 36th minute, Atlanta had thought that they had doubled their lead, however, the offside flag was raised, and the score remained 1-0.

New England then had a chance entering the 38th minute when forward Leo Campana tee’d up a long-distant effort that went over the bar.

Following the shot, in the 38th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first change of the match by replacing Ignatius Ganago with Noel Buck. (This was a pre-planned substitution)

New England then had a chance entering the 45th minute when midfielder Carles Gil’s freekick delivery into the box was met with a header in the area that then cleared the box. The offsides flag was then raised.

After the initial 45+5 minutes, the match entered halftime with Atlanta ahead 1-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, Atlanta United replaced goalkeeper Brad Guzan with goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

The second half kicked off with New England starting from the center circle. They elected to build out of the back before defender Mamadou Fofana launched the ball forward which was received by goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

New England had the first chance of the second half when a freekick in the 50th minute was delivered by Carles Gil and met with a back-post header away by Atlanta United for a corner kick. In the following corner kick, the ball bounced in the area before it was ultimately cleared away.

Entering the 56th minute, Atlanta added to their lead.

Following a cross into the area, the ball fell kindly to midfielder Mateusz Klich, who then fired a rocket of a shot into the top corner past goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič to add to their lead.

New England’s next chance came from a corner kick in the 60th minute that led to a delivery by Alhassan Yusuf and headed by Brandon Bye. The header was caught by goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

Entering the 68th minute, Atlanta United FC replaced their 10 outfield players. Only Goalkeeper Josh Cohen stayed in the match. Wynne, Morales, Cobb, Reilly, Fortune, Muyumba, Mosquera, Silva, Brennan, Togashi all entered.

Entering the 73rd minute, the New England Revolution replaced their entire 11-man lineup. Parisian, Feingold, Omsberg, Beason, Miller, Farrell, Klein, Oyirwoth, Panayotou, Fry, & Urruti all entered.

Atlanta had a chance in the 75th minute when Luke Brennan’s delivery into the area was headed away by Ilay Feingold.

New England’s best chance came in the 77th minute when Andrew Farrell’s delivery to the top of the box was met with a half-volley attempt by Allan Oyirwoth. His effort snuck just wide of the right post.

In the 78th minute, an Atlanta United player was issued a yellow card.

Less than 30 seconds later, Revolution defender Ilay Feingold was issued a yellow card for a foul at midfield.

New England had yet another chance in the 84th minute when a cross into the area from a freekick was cleared away.

Just 2 minutes later, New England had another shot that was deflected for a corner kick.

In the 92nd minute, Atlanta United midfielder Edwin Mosquera was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul near midfield.

After the 90+4 minutes, the match concluded with Atlanta holding on to the 2-0 victory.

Following the match versus Tampa Bay Rowdies (Tuesday, February 11th), the team will return home for three days of training ahead of a final tune-up match against USL Championship side Hartford Athletic (12-8-14, 44 points – 10th in East last season).

The preseason finale in Foxborough will be streamed as well as be open for Revolution Season Members to attend, giving supporters their first in-person look at New England’s refreshed roster one week before the regular season opener in Nashville.

Their match is set to kickoff at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, February 15th at 7:30 p.m. ET
