Santos’ stunner leads Orlando to 3-0 victory over New England

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (8-3-16, 27 pts.) were defeated 3-0 versus Orlando City SC (11-7-10 40 pts.) on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Inter & Co Stadium to a crowd of 25,500.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Aljaž Ivačič starting in net with a backline of (left back) Peyton Miller, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Tim Parker, along with (right back) Nick Lima. The midfield spots were manned by Mark-Anthony Kaye (left defensive midfield) and Ian Harkes (right defensive midfield), with Carles Gil appearing ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Luca Langoni (left wing), Dylan Borrero (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

Midfielders Alhassan Yusuf is on the bench for the first time in his Revolution career.

Midfielder Matt Polster was replaced late in the match day squad due to injury.

Revolution head coach Caleb Porter is suspended for tonight’s match due to comments made about PRO Officials and MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Assistant coach Federico Pizzuto is the head coach for tonight’s match.

The match began with New England starting from the center circle and swiftly advancing the ball into Orlando’s defensive third.

Orlando City had the first major chance of the match when midfielder #10 Facundo Torres’ half-volley effort went high over the net in the 15th minute

New England’s first chance came a minute later when Nick Lima’s long-distant cross was cleared away by defender #15 Rodrigo Schlegel in the box. The effort was toward Dylan Borrero.

Orlando had yet another major opportunity less than 3 minutes later when forward #7 Ramiro Enrique attempted a scissor kick volley that went wide of the net.

Entering the 21st minute, Orlando gained the lead.

Following a corner kick delivery by midfielder #11 Martín Ojeda, the ball was played short to midfielder #77 Iván Angulo. He then sent to the top of the box and was buried into the top left corner by defender #3 Rafael Santos to make it 1-0 to Orlando.

Orlando had yet another chance in the 27th minute when midfielder #16 Wilder Cartagena’s effort went just wide of the net.

Less than one minute later, New England had a chance of their own when midfielder Ian Harkes’ effort went high over the bar.

In the 38th minute, Revolution defender Tim Parker was issued a yellow card for kicking the ball away after  a foul on midfielder #10 Facundo Torres.

Orlando had yet another fantastic opportunity in the 44th minute when forward #7 Ramiro Enrique had a 1v1 that was blocked away by defender Dave Romney for a corner kick.

Entering the 45+1 minute, Orlando added to their lead.

Following a handball in the box by midfielder Carles Gil, the penalty was taken by midfielder #10 Facundo Torres, who buried into the top right corner to make it 2-0 just before halftime.

Orlando had yet another fantastic opportunity just before halftime when midfielder #16 Wilder Cartagena’s effort was met with a fantastic save by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with Orlando ahead 2-0.

The second half began with Orlando starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into New England’s defensive third.

Orlando had the first chance of the second half when midfielder #11 Martín Ojeda’s half volley chance went just wide of the net.

Less than one minute later, Orlando City midfielder #16 Wilder Cartagena was issued a yellow card for a foul on Dylan Borrero.

Orlando had yet another amazing opportunity when midfielder #10 Facundo Torres struck the post in the 54th minute.

In the 58th minute, Revolution interim head coach Federico Pizzuto made his first change of the match by replacing Dylan Borrero with Esmir Bajraktarević.

New England’s best chance of the entire match came from a 60th minute free kick by Carles Gil that was met with a spectacular full stretch save by goalkeeper #1 Pedro Gallese.

In the 67th minute, Orlando City forward #7 Ramiro Enrique was issued a yellow card due to a clash with Tim Parker.

One minute later, Orlando head coach Oscar Pareja made his first two changes by replacing forward #7 Ramiro Enrique and midfielder #11 Martín Ojeda and replacing them with midfielder #14 Nico Lodeiro and forward #13 Duncan McGuire.

Less than one minute later, Orlando had yet another chance when midfielder #10 Facundo Torres’ effort missed just wide of the net.

In the 71st minute, Revolution interim head coach Federico Pizzuto made his second and third change of the match by replacing Luca Langoni and Ian Harkes with Emmanuel Boateng and Luca Langoni.

Entering the 73rd minute, Orlando added to their lead.

Forward Duncan McGuire drove down the right flank and his shot snuck under the arm of goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič to make it 3-0 to Orlando City SC.

Following the goal, Orlando City head coach Oscar Pareja replaced midfielder #77 Iván Angulo with forward #9 Luis Muriel.

In the 78th minute, Revolution midfielder Emmanuel Boateng was issued a yellow card for a harsh foul on Orlando City foward #13 Duncan McGuire.

Following the foul, both teams made changes. Orlando City head coach Oscar Pareja replaced midfielders #10 Facundo Torres and #5 César Araújo with forward #34 Yutaro Tsukada and #8 Felipe Martins. Revolution interim head coach Federico Pizzuto replaced Peyton Miller and Carles Gil with Nacho Gil and Xavier Arreaga.

New Englands next chance came in the 83rd minute when Emmanuel Boateng had 2 efforts that were saved and then headed over the bar.

In the 90+2 minute, Revolution midfielder Esmir Bajraktarević was issued a yellow card for a foul on Orlando City forward #9 Luis Muriel.

After the 90+3 minutes, the match concluded with Orlando holding to the commanding 3-0 victory over New England.

With the result, New England fallen to last place (15th) in the MLS Eastern Conference. They currently sit 5 points below the playoff line with one game in hand.

The New England Revolution (8-3-16, 27 pts.) return home where they are set to face MLS Eastern Conference side CF Montréal (11-7-10 40 pts.) on Wednesday, September 18th. The match kicks off in Gillette Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
