Powell: “We were our own worst enemy.”

Castleford Tigers head coach Daryl Powell was left in two mindsets after his side came away 23-18 winners against Wakefield Trinity. 

The Tigers dominated the game in the first half but came away looking like the worse off side in the second half.

A brace of tries from winger Greg Eden saw the Tigers record their 16th straight win over Wakefield, however a poor defensive performance in the second period let the visitors back into the game.

Saturday evening’s fixture certainly lived up to the hype and was a game that was ever changing something Powell reflected on post match.

“It was a game of two halves, I thought we were good in the first half. Really controlled, I thought defensively we were outstanding and we got after Wakefield,” Powell told Prost International.

“We controlled territory and our halves came up with some real smart plays.

“Second half , it was just the complete opposite, Wakefield stepped up we thought we had the game won.”

Half back Danny Richardson who has come under fire from Tigers fans recently had one of his best performances in a Tigers shirt and was praised by Powell. Nathan Massey and Jordan Turner also put in man of the match performances during the first opening period.

However, Powell acknowledged that the Tigers were their own worst enemies and that the game could have easily have been lost.

“It was just a poor second half performance from us we never got a hold of it we could have easily lost it at the end,” added Powell.

“I thought our back field boys carried it, Jordan Turner was brilliant in the first half, Massey was class, I thought our half backs did some smart plays.

“Richardson created a couple of opportunities. Niall Evalds was great in that first half. If you stop the game at half time it’s a really dominant clinical professional performance.

“We never really got any control at all and ended up clinging on at the end.

“As I say a game of two halves a really professional disciplined performance in the first half and then a really loose poor performance in the second.

“We were our own worst enemy, if you don’t take your opportunities then you’re inviting pressure on your own line.

“They scored from kicks today and got back in the game and nearly got back in the game. We have won 16 straight which is a proud record for a local derby.”

The Tigers next game is against Hull FC who came away 23-22 winners in their Derby with Hull KR.
