A brilliant second-half performance saw Wycombe Wanderers come back from 2-0 down to eventually win the game 3-2 thanks to a late strike by midfielder Josh Knight.

It was a second-half performance worthy of winning any football match, full of desire and belief as they continue their fight for survival in the Sky Bet Championship.

This win takes the Chairboys onto 19 points for the season, and despite still being 10 points from safety, this performance will give the fans and players alike confidence that they’re capable of escaping the dreaded drop this season.

On a day where Wycombe went 2-0 down inside the first 40 minutes it was looking bleak for Gareth Ainsworth’s men, however a goal on the stroke of half-time seemed to give his team belief heading into the second half. What followed afterwards was simply special.

Huddersfield did take a deserved lead in the 17th minute, as Juninho Bacuna headed in from close range.

It came after some good build up play from the Terriers as the ball was worked out wide to Fraizer Campbell, his cross then found Bacuna who was all alone in the six-yard box. The midfielder then had the easy job of nodding past Ryan Allsop in the Wycombe net to make it 1-0.

The Town continued to dominate and carried a constant threat to the Wycombe defence. They almost added to their early lead as right-back Pipa created some space just inside the box however his shot was fired straight at the ‘keeper.

Despite the Terriers dominance, Wycombe did show glimpses in attack and had their moments during the first half. Their best opportunity fell to Uche Ikpeazu, but the striker’s effort was cleared off the line by Naby Sarr.

In what was an open first half, it was in fact Huddersfield who capitalised on this as they doubled their lead five minutes before the break.

The Terriers broke away at speed before feeding it into Mbenza on the left wing, the attacker cut inside and dispatched his shot into the far corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.

As it was looking like Gareth Ainsworth had an uphill task on his hands heading into half-time, he was given a massive boost in added time as Anis Mehmet’s low strike from the edge of the box found its way into the back of the net.

A goal that seemed to spark confidence and belief amongst the Chairboys. They returned after the break looking rejuvenated, hungry for more, as they took the game to Huddersfield.

On the hour mark they were handed a huge opportunity as Ikpeazu was bundled to the floor by Jonathan Hogg in the penalty box.

Captain Joe Jacobson made no mistake from the spot as he dispatched his penalty past Schofield in the Huddersfield net. Game on.

At this point it was anyone’s game, but after clawing back a 2-0 deficit the advantage lay with Gareth Ainsworth’s side as they hunted for the all-important three points.

Wycombe continued to dominate as they grew in confidence. A chance fell to Stewart and he headed towards goal however Town ‘keeper Schofield made an important save to deny him.

Despite the best efforts of the Huddersfield defence, the all-important goal came in the dying embers as Josh Knight slotted home to secure all three points for Wycombe. A truly emphatic comeback from 2-0 down.

Some would ask, is this game at The John Smith’s Stadium the one to turn Wycombe’s season around? Who knows?

But it will certainly give Gareth Ainsworth belief heading into the latter part of the season, while also proving that his side is capable of winning matches at this level as they fight to avoid relegation.

Up next for the Chairboys is a crucial six pointer against fellow Championship strugglers Derby County.

The game on Tuesday is another must win fixture as they look to make up points on those teams around them.
