Borussia Monchengladbach seek to rectify poor form against Freiburg

Borussia Monchengladbach will want to build on the win over Mainz last time out, as their Champions League qualification spot in the Bundesliga comes under threat.

Die Fohlen were Dortmunds closest challengers to the Bundesliga title for a period, before Bayern Munich made their charge to top spot. But recent form means Gladbach have dropped to fourth place and sit just three points above Eintracht Frankfurt.

Meanwhile Freiburg sit comfortably mid-table in 12th place on 30 points with no imminent danger of relegation or challenging for European spots. Christian Streich’s side have lost just once in their last five outings, an away trip to Leverkusen where Peter Bosz’s side passed their way to vistory.

Dieter Hecking has seen his Monchengladbach side lose three home games this season, and collected more points at their home ground than everyone but Dortmund in the German top flight. Despite that, the three losses on their record have come in the last three games at Borussia Park.

Freiburg meanwhile, have suffered on the road this season. Just two wins on their travels all season, scoring just 11 goals in the 12 matches played, conceding 21 in the process. The visitors do boast a strong mentality though, which can be seen in their ability to score late in games. Four points have been rescued in their last six fixtures due to goals in the final ten minutes.

Ibrahima Traore and Mamadou Doucoure are out for Monchengladbach whilst Lukas Kubler is missing for the visitors. Roland Salai for Freiburg looks set to continue his spell on the sidelines with a long term injury.

Gladbach have not lost on home soil to this weekends opponents since 1995, with six draws and nine wins since that fixture. The reverse fixture this season, in round nine of the Bundesliga, saw Freiburg run out 3-1 winners at Schwarzwald-Stadion, with top scorer Nils Petersen scoring a penalty in the opening minute.

The home side should have enough to see off their opponents this weekend, with the home faithful desperate for a turnaround in form on their own patch.

Prediction: Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 SC Freiburg
