Cesar Azpilicueta has called the 6-0 thrashing his Chelsea team suffered at the hands of Manchester City “one of the worst nights in my career”.
The Blues suffered their heaviest loss in the Premier League era just two weeks after being hammered 4-0 by Bournemouth.
Speaking with the club website, Azpilicueta said:
“It’s very frustrating, it’s very disappointing. We have lost big games in the first minutes and we are conceding lots of goals. We cannot accept that.
“When you lost 6-0 everyone has to accept they didn’t play well, we made errors that in big games like this you cannot make.”
City scored four goals in the opening 25 minutes, effectively killing the game as a contest before half-time.
The heavy defeat even saw Chelsea slip down to sixth in the Premier League table, behind rivals Arsenal on goals scored.
Azpilicueta offered an apology to the travelling Chelsea support:
“The only thing I can say to the fans is sorry, because it’s not acceptable, and I feel sorry for all of them.”
Maurizio Sarri’s side are not in league action again until February 27, when they take on Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
Before that, they must play Malmo twice in the Europa League, Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round and square off once more against City when they clash in the Carabao Cup final.
