Alex Morgan is undoubtedly one of the biggest names in women’s football and her achievements thus far have been sensational. She spoke to FIFA.com ahead of the Women’s World Cup draw.
The USA star, 29, is set to take part in her third World Cup when France host the tournament in June 2019 as the USA look to retain the trophy they won in 2015 for a record third time.
2018 has been an excellent year for the Americans as they have gone 20 matches unbeaten and Morgan has scored 18 goals and registered three assists in 19 appearances for her country.
Speaking ahead of the Women’s World Cup draw, the Orlando Pride star was asked if the USA would be able to overcome the so called ‘curse of champions’ where teams struggle in a major tournament after they win it. She said:
“I’m not too concerned in this team’s case because there has been such a big turnover of players since 2015.
“For so many in our squad, this will be their first World Cup and those new players bring a youthful energy that, speaking as a veteran, is really contagious.
“I can see the concern but, while the public and media might see us as ‘defending’ this title, for us it’s a totally new challenge with a new team and a new dynamic. Hunger won’t be an issue.”
The USA remain top of the latest World rankings and have been drawn in Pot 1 alongside hosts France, Germany, England, Canada and Australia.
Morgan and her USA team will find out their opponents for next year’s World Cup when the draw takes place on December 8 at 17:00 GMT.
