Pompey prove to be too strong for Charlton with dominant win in south east London

Pompey recovered from their recent league losses with a 3-1 win away at fellow promotion chasers Charlton.

The fixture was originally meant to take place three days ago but a waterlogged pitch prevented the game from occurring, and it was subsequently rearranged for tonight.

New Pompey signing Charlie Daniels made his first start for the club since arriving last month and the Blues opted for a 4-4-2 formation in this game, with John Marquis and Ellis Harrison leading the line. Charlton went for a 4-3-1-2 lineup, with Albie Morgan sitting behind strikers Ronnie Schwartz and Jayden Stockley.

With both teams looking to strengthen their cases for promotion to the Championship next season, three points for either side would do them a world of good.

The hosts were able to get off to a quick start in SE7 and they had the first real chance of the game with Morgan, who is celebrating his 21st birthday today, hitting the bar on the 10 minute mark.

Marquis had a great chance to give Pompey the lead when he went one-on-one with goalkeeper Ben Amos, only for the latter to make a good save and deny the Blues a goal. The visitor’s no.9 had another couple of chances to break the deadlock, but proved to be unsuccessful with his attempts.

However with just six minutes left of the first half, Pompey took the lead. Captain Tom Naylor sent a pass from the edge of the box into the path of Michael Jacobs, who hit a half-volley shot into the top left corner of the Charlton goal.

With Portsmouth leading 1-0 at the start of the second half, Charlton sought a quick equaliser. There was a big shout for a penalty for the hosts as Sean Raggett appeared to drag back Darren Pratley, but the referee waved away the protests.

Despite this, the Addicks got what they were looking for and equalised. Jayden Stockley, who had a loan spell at Pompey five seasons ago, headed in from a corner and levelled the scoring.

Charlton’s momentum was short lived as Pompey regained the lead just three minutes later. Marcus Harness had only just been substituted on to replace Ryan Williams, but he sent in a free kick which was met by Naylor and headed past Amos to make it 2-1 to Pompey.

The south coast side soon made it 3-1 thanks to Andy Cannon. His shot from the edge of the box was well executed as it curled and hit the post into the back of the net.

After a crazy few opening minutes of the second half at The Valley, the drama calmed down. Charlton kept trying to find a way back into the game, but their poor execution in the final third would prove to be their downfall.

A late flurry of chances for the hosts were all unsuccessful and eventually the three points were secured by Pompey, who ensured it wasn’t three consecutive losses for them in League One.

The win puts Portsmouth in fourth and four points off the automatic places, while Charlton move down to eighth after 26 games. Pompey face Plymouth next on Saturday at Fratton Park, whilst Charlton take a trip to Rochdale.
