Heartbreak in the Open Cup: Revolution Lead Three Times, Lose 4-3 to Orlando

PAWTUCKET, RI–New England Revolution (5-1-3, 16 pts.) were defeated 4-3 versus Orlando City SC (2-1-6, 7 pts.) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Centreville Bank Stadium to a crowd of 500.

The match kicked off with Orlando City controlling possession from the center circle and working the ball through midfield.

In the 1st minute, Orlando City SC defender Colin Guske was issued a yellow card for a hard foul on defender Gabriel Dahlin.

Braian Ojeda had the first effort on goal in the 7th minute, when his long-distance shot was saved by goalkeeper Donovan Parisian.

Orlando had a massive chance in the 14th minute when a poor giveaway by defender Andrew Farrell led to a shot from Ignacio Gomez that was deflected out for a corner.

Malcolm Fry had New England’s first effort on goal in the 18th minute, when his left-footed shot hit the side netting.

Entering the 20th minute, New England took the lead.

Midfielder Eric Klein found forward Malcolm Fry inside the box, and his left-footed shot slipped through the legs of goalkeeper Javier Otero to give New England a 1–0 lead.

Marcos Zambrano had New England’s next big chance in the 25th minute when Malcolm Fry found him open inside the box. His left-footed shot struck the post.

Entering the 30th minute, Orlando leveled the scoreline.

Following a delivery into the area by defender Colin Guske, the ball was headed home by defender Iago to make it 1-1.

Braian Ojeda had a chance less than a minute later to give Orlando the lead, but his effort from six yards out was sent over the bar.

Entering the 37th minute, New England took the lead.

Following a free-kick delivery into the area by midfielder Diego Fagundez, the ball fell to Gabe Dahlin and Allan Oyirwoth, was bobbled around, and eventually set up for defender Andrew Farrell to blast into the net, making it 2–1.

Marcos Zambrano had a chance less than a minute later when his shot inside the box was saved away by goalkeeper Javier Otero.

Less than a minute later, Marcos Zambrano had another chance when his bicycle kick attempt that went just over the net.

Entering the 39th minute, Orlando leveled the scoreline.

Following a give-and-go with Braian Ojeda, the ball fell to defender Griffin Dorsey, who unleashed right-footed rocket into the top-right corner to make it 2–2.

In the 40th minute, Orlando City SC midfielder Ignacio Gomez was issued a yellow card for fouling midfielder Allan Oyirwoth.

New England had a massive chance in the 42nd minute when an effort from defender Tanner Beason struck the post before falling to Eric Klein, whose follow-up shot was blocked out for a corner.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with the scoreline level at 2-2.

Prior to the start of the second half, Orlando City interim head coach Martin Perelman made his first change by replacing Tiago with forward Tyrese Spicer.

The second half kicked off with New England controlling possession from the center circle and working the ball through midfield.

Orlando had a chance in the 46th minute when an ambitious effort by Tyrese Spicer went over the bar.

Entering the 57th minute, New England took the lead.

Midfielder Eric Klein found forward Marcos Zambrano inside the box, where his right-footed shot slipped into the bottom-left corner to make it 3–2.

In the 64th minute, Orlando City interim head coach Martin Perelman made three changes by replacing midfielder Braian Ojeda, winger Ivan Angulo, & defender Griffin Dorsey with midfielder Luis Otavio, defender Robin Jansson & winger Zakaria Taifi.

Diego Fagundez had a long-distant effort in the 67th minute that snuck just wide of the left post.

Entering the 69th minute, Orlando leveled the scoreline.

Following a delivery into the area by Tyrese Spicer, goalkeeper Donovan Parisian poorly parried the ball, which fell to Justin Ellis for a tap-in to make it 3–3.

Orlando thought they had taken the lead in the 74th minute when a cut-back cross was scored by forward Justin Ellis, however, the play was deemed offsides.

In the 77th minute, Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez was issued a yellow card for simulation.

Less than a minute later, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his first change of the match by replacing winger Diego Fagundez with midfielder Javaun Mussenden.

In the 82nd minute, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his second change of the match by replacing defender Damario McIntosh with defender Schinieder Mimy.

In the 83rd minute, Revolution midfielder Allan Oyirwoth was issued a yellow card for a foul

Just five minutes later, in the 85th minute, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his third change of the match by replacing forward Cristiano Oliveira with forward Shuma Sasaki.

Entering the 90+2 minute, Orlando City SC took the lead.

Forward Tyrese Spicer played a ball into the box that found forward Zakaria Taifi at the back post to make it 4-3 to Orlando.

In the 90+4 minute, Orlando City interim head coach Martin Perelman made fifth change by replacing midfielder Ignacio Gomez with defender Tahir Reid-Brown.

After the 90+7 minutes, the match concluded with Orlando City SC holding on for the 4-3 victory.

With the result, New England have been eliminated from Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Orlando City SC have advanced to the Quarterfinals.
