England captain Joe Root has led England to four consecutive Test Match victories on their travels and the 30-year-old is pleased with the way his side are shaping up ahead of a busy year of cricket across all formats.
This all came after bowling out the tourists for just 135 on the opening day before Root scored his fourth double century in Test Match cricket to set England on their way to a seven wicket win early on the final day.
The Yorkshireman has been skipper since Alistair Cook gave it up in 2017 and has since gone onto draw level with Cook in terms of Test Match wins as captain and is now only behind Michael Vaughan in becoming England’s most successful captain of all time in the longest form of the game.
“We aren’t the finished article; we have a long way to go.
“We are making little errors but we are getting better. That is seen by the results we are having.
“We know there are bigger challenges ahead but we are going in the right direction. You can’t ask any more.
“It has not been the perfect performance – we are well aware of that.”
England will remain in Galle for the second and final Test of the series before they move on to India for a four match series against Virat Kohli’s men in February.
