Laura Bassett, a former England defender with 61 caps to her name, has announced her retirement.
The 35-year-old began her career in Coventry in 2000 and went on to play for WSL sides Birmingham City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Notts County.
Bassett last played for W-League’s Canberra United in early 2018.
Speaking about her retirement, Bassett said:
“It has been a privilege to play a tiny part in Lioness history and to have experienced the progression of women’s football in England.
“I am beyond proud to belong to the Lioness alumni.
“I have been fortunate to win silverware throughout my career and be part of wonderfully talented teams.”
Bassett will, unfortunately, also be remembered for an own goal scored against Japan at the 2015 Women’s World Cup semi-finals which gifted Japan a 2-1 win.
However, England will be hoping to put such heartache behind them this summer in France.
The Women’s World Cup takes place in France from June 7 – July 7.
