Premier League team of the season opinion

0

The Premier League season is almost over with only two games remaining this season. The title race sees Manchester City and Liverpool one point apart of each other, and the top four race sees Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United separated by five points. With the PFA Team of the Season already released, this is my opinion on who should have been included in the Team of the Season.

GK- Alisson Becker

Alisson has been a commanding presence in goal for the Reds and he continues to make a fantastic impression in his first season at Anfield.

The six foot four Brazilian has also been an excellent shot-stopper and a quick mover for a man of his size. The Liverpool goalkeeper currently tops the Golden Glove standings with 17 clean sheets just two more than Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

RB- Matt Doherty

Doherty has been impressive in his first season in the top flight with Wolves with all the Wolves back-line being phenomenal this season but Doherty has been exceptional.

Since August 2018, Doherty has scored eight goals and recording eight assists in all competitions for Wolves which is the most involvement in goals for a right-back with 16 followed behind by Trent-Alexander Arnold who has ten involvements.

CB- Virgil Van Dijk

The Dutch international has had a great season for the league leading Liverpool. Van Dijk has rarely made a mistake for the Reds and always seems to control the back four.

With Jordan Henderson on the bench on some occasions the centre-back plays a vital part as captain and has not lost in any games that he has captained. In addition, the centre-back has played 2,935 minutes in the Premier League this season- without any opponent managing to dribble past the Dutch international.

CB- Aymeric Laporte

Laporte has had another brilliant season for the Citizens in the heart of their defence. He as been a quality defender and distributor of the ball. The Frenchman has passed the ball nearly 2,500 times this season in the Premier League.

Laporte has started almost every game in the Premier League. Being at the heart of defence is tough but, Laporte has coped with the tough nature of the Premier League and has adapted with the style of play. His 51% tackle success is above average but, the Citizens defence has only conceded 21 goals, one more than Premier League leaders Liverpool which shows how key Laporte’s presence at the back for City is.

LB- Andy Robertson

The quick Scotsman has had another fantastic season for the Reds and is the third Reds player included in this team as Liverpool push for the league title.

Robertson has become a fan favourite after a great season that has seen him pick up nine assists this season the same amount as Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Manchester City wingers Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane. In addition, he has the most assists at Liverpool with full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah both on seven and has made the most tackles, 74 which is 24 more than Brazilian midfielder Fabinho. On top of these stats the Liverpool back line have only conceded 20 goals this season and kept 17 clean sheets in 34 games with Andy Robertson being a major part of that backline.

LM- Sadio Mane

The Senegalese forward has been a main factor of Liverpool’s goals since under performances from Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah and is the last Liverpool player in this 11.

A fantastic tally of 17 goals in 31 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League puts him only 2 away from current top scorer, City’s Sergio Aguero. Mane’s shooting accuracy has improved this year, from 37% last year to 47% this year with the Liverpool winger being more clinical and showing Liverpool fans why they love the ever-great winger.

CM- Fernandinho

The centre defensive midfielder has been very consistent even with an injury side-lining him for a part of this campaign.

Fernandinho has excelled and been a very key figure for City in the midfield department. He has been amazing especially with his defensive duties. A tackle success of 75% is 24% better than defender Aymeric Laporte and is one of the highest in the league.

CM- Bernardo Silva

In his second season for the Sky Blues, Bernardo Silva has been a key player in City’s midfield and has been also featured on the wing as Pep Guardiola looks to be building on the versatility his team has got.

The Portuguese international has played most of the games for the Citizens and has scored seven goals and recorded seven assists in the Premier League this season with this being his best season under Guardiola.

RM- Raheem Sterling

The Player of the Year nominee has yet again exceeded everyone’s expectations and has had a splendid year all round.

The Englishmen was named player of the month in November 2018 and, has made 26 appearances for Man City this season being involved in 24 goals, scoring 15 and assisting nine. Sterling has always been a threat down the right side for both Liverpool and Man City. Sterling now aged 24 has played one of the best seasons ever and is looking to take the prestigious player of the year trophy that he has well earned.

ST- Sergio Aguero

The all-time Man City goal scorer has had a season to remember yet again, the Argentine leading the goal scorer charts and is looking to add to his trophy cabinet with a few well-deserved awards.

Player of the month in February, Carabao Cup winner are just two trophies that Aguero has won this season. The striker is at the top of the goal scoring charts and may be closing in on another Golden Boot trophy with the previous one he won way back in the 2014/15 season. Sterling and Aguero are great goal scoring threats with scoring a combined 34 goals out of City’s 83 they have scored in the league.

ST- Eden Hazard

The Belgian winger has had a phonemenal individual season, with the Belgian contributing to 29 goals this season for Chelsea.

He won Player of the Month in September 2018 and he helped Chelsea reach the Carabao Cup final which they ultimately lost narrowly being beat by Manchester City on penalties 5-3. The Belgian has been fantastic for the Blues and shows his flair every week including scoring a great solo goal against West Ham and also scoring a brace in that game.
