Revolution II handed 8th straight loss, lose 2-1 to Crew 2

FOXBOROUGH, MA— The New England Revolution II (4-3-14, 17 pts.) were defeated 2-1 versus Columbus Crew 2 (10-6-5, 39 pts.) on Sunday afternoon.

The match kicked off at 6:00 p.m. ET. at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with goalkeeper Max Weinstein starting in the net with a backline of (left back) Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi, (center backs) Santiago Suarez and Eric Klein along with (right back) Colby Quiñones. The midfield roles were manned by Patrick Leal (left), Luka Borovic (central) and Javaun Mussenden (right). The forward roles were manned by Joshua Bolma (left), Marcos Dias (central) and Alex Monis (right).

First team players Santiago Suarez and Joshua Bolma started the match today.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Chicago’s defensive third.

New England had the first moment of the match when a freekick attempt in the 7th minute cleared the wall but went wide of the net.

Just two minutes later, Marcos Dias and Alex Monis both had opportunities that went beckoning.

Entering the 12th minute, Columbus took the early lead.

Following a bad giveaway by Patrick Leal, Columbus went on the attack. Midfielder #49 Tristan Brown centered the ball to find forward #29 Cole Mrowka for the finish from 10-yards out to make it 1-0 to Crew 2.

In the 17th minute, Columbus Crew 2 forward #52 Chase Adams was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 19th minute, New England leveled the scoreline.

Forward Joshua Bolma drove down the left flank before centering a cross to find the right-foot of Marcos Dias for the finish past goalkeeper #13 Stanislav Lapkes to level it 1-1.

New England then had a pair of chances in the 21st and 23rd minutes when Joshua Bolma and Alex Monis both missed their chances.

Less than 1 minute later, Columbus had a chance of their own when forward #29 Cole Mrowka’s long-distant effort was caught comfortably by Max Weinstein.

Columbus had the last chance of the half when midfielder #10 Adrian Gonzalez’ effort was met with a diving catch save by Max Weinstein.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime level at 1-1.

Prior to the start of the second half, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his first change by replacing midfielder Luka Borovic with midfielder Olger Escobar.

The second half kicked off with Columbus Crew 2 starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into New England’s defensive third.

Olger Escobar had the first chance of the second half in the 59th minute when Joshua Bolma laid the ball off to Escobar, however, his effort on goal was weak.

Entering the 62nd minute, Columbus Crew 2 were given a penalty kick for a foul by Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi.

The ensuing penalty kick taken by forward #29 Cole Mrowka was saved by goalkeeper Max Weinstein and cleared by Santiago Suarez.

In the 63rd minute, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his second change of the match by replacing forward Alex Monis with forward Gevork Diarbian.

In the 69th minute, Columbus Crew 2 head coach Kelvin Jones made his first three changes of the match. He replaced midfielder #10 Adrian Gonzalez and forwards #18 Gibran Rayo and #29 Cole Mrowka with midfielders #8 Giorgio De Libera, #43 Anthony Alaouieh and forward #9 Jayden Da.

Entering the 75th minute, Columbus regained the lead.

Following a cross into the box by midfielder #8 Giorgio De Libera, the ball deflected off of the foot of Patrick Leal and into his own net to make it 2-1 to Columbus Crew 2.

In the 77th minute, Revolution II midfielder Javaun Mussenden was issued a yellow card. Following the foul, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his final change by replacing midfielder Javaun Mussenden with defender DaMario McIntosh.

Less than two minutes later, Revolution II defender Santiago Suarez was issued a yellow card.

In the 85th minute, Columbus Crew 2 head coach Kelvin Jones made his fourth change of the match by replacing defender #2 Jacob Greene with defender #12 Xavier Zengue.

Moments later, New England had a great chance when Marcos Dias’ shot was met with a finger-tip full extension save by goalkeeper #13 Stanislav Lapkes and out for a corner kick. The ensuing corner led to a second corner and led to a strike by Eric Klein that struck the crossbar, however, the play was called dead for offsides.

In the 90+2 minute, Columbus Crew 2 head coach Kelvin Jones made his final change of the match by replacing midfielder #20 Nicolas Jacobo with #7.

After the 90+5 minutes, the match concluded with Columbus holding onto the 2-1 victory.

With the result, New England remain in 15th in the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference Standings. They have the worst record in the league (29 teams in MLS NEXT Pro).

Richie Williams and the New England Revolution II (4-3-14, 17 pts.) remain on the road to face Eastern Conference side Carolina Core FC (7-6-3, 32 pts.). The match will kick off at South Carolina United FC BB&T Soccer Complex in Irmo, South Carolina at 7:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, August 24th.
