As things stand we are looking at a topsy=turvy finish to the English League One 2021/22 season which sums up what has been an exhilarating season in the third tier.
Three teams are each in the running for the title despite Wigan being one foot in the Championship in midweek as they saw their promotion party snatched from under their nose after a brilliant second half comeback from Portsmouth.
Tomorrow will also decide who finishes in a play-off place with Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Plymouth and Wycombe still in the running and every one of them depending on results could either stay or drop out of play-off positions in tomorrow’s games.
The fight for the Title and automatic promotion
Leam Richardson’s Wigan have been top for most of the season and will look for things to stay that way in their trip away to Shrewsbury. Despite them being hot favourites Wigan, have come within a goal of clinching promotion in each of their last matches, only to have been denied.
Despite their agonising defeat to Portsmouth after a second half masterclass from Pompey coming back from two goals down to lead 3-2, the Latics will be confident they can brush aside a Shrewsbury team they’ve beaten twice this season already.
Second placed Rotherham will showdown against Gillingham at the Priestfield stadium in the hopes to wrap up automatic promotion and possibly take the title back to South Yorkshire if results go their way.
Paul Warne’s side are the experts in winning promotion at this level and have done so four times in the last eight years. Although the Millers are without an away win since February, they’ll take confidence from their last meeting with Gillingham that ended 5-1.
Liam Manning’s MK Dons have enjoyed a brilliant season, despite losing boss Russel Martin to Swansea just before kicking off their League One campaign.
MK Dons are hot on the heels of Rotherham. They’ve booked their play-off spot but they’ll be looking to go one further and clinch automatic promotion in their tie against Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.
The three from four race for the play-offs
At present the identity of who will be joining the three teams mentioned above in the play-off places are undetermined.
Sheffield Wednesday seemed to have put themselves in a tricky position when they fell behind to Stephen Crainey’s Fleetwood Town but they now know a point will do against Portsmouth at Hillsborough in their bid for a play-off place.
Sunderland’s last gasp equaliser against title challengers Rotherham was an important point in their promotion hopes. Just to emphasise how close things are at the top of the table, if they’d have lost heavily, they could have started Saturday out of the top six altogether.
They travel to a struggling Morecambe side who they’ve picked up all three points against in every fixture they’ve played against previous.
Sixth-placed Plymouth will likely scrap it out with Wycombe who were all but forgotten until their recent run of form that’s seen them make a last ditch bid at promotion this season.
The Pilgrims face off against MK Dons in their last game of the season whilst Wycombe play Burton away from home and go into that off the back of an 11-game unbeaten run.
Who will win the title and who will make the play off places? All is to be decided in tomorrow’s fixtures at 12:30.
