There is just one game left of the League One season, with Portsmouth, Oxford, and Charlton all fighting for one spot.
We’ve arrived at the end of possibly the most bizarre League One season ever, with games postponed left, right, and centre. Not to mention the lack of fans for almost the entire season.
And with one game remaining, three teams will fight it out for the last play-off spot.
Portsmouth will welcome Accrington Stanley knowing that a win will be enough to see them through to the play-offs once again, looking to go one step further than last year and reach the final.
For those asking who Accrington Stanley are, don’t be fooled. They have a good record against the bigger sides in the division including wins against Hull City, Peterborough, and Oxford.
Stanley also battled out a 3-3 draw with Pompey just two games ago.
Pompey currently occupy the last play-off spot and sit on 72 points, one more than both Oxford and Charlton.
A draw at home to Stanley will leave the door open for the other two.
A loss, and United would only need a draw to make the cut due to having a better goal difference than Pompey, whilst Charlton would still need to win.
Extra motivation can come in the form of Ronan Curtis, who could be playing his last game for the South Coast side.
The Republic of Ireland International has confirmed the interest of several Championship sides after another season of double figures in goals for the winger.
Oxford United will be looking to make up for last year when they lost 2-1 to Wycombe in the play-off final as they welcome Burton to the Kassam.
Oxford possess the luxury of having the best goal difference of the three teams.
United will need to better Portsmouth’s result in order to make it to the play-offs. A draw for Pompey means the U’s can go through with a win, regardless of Charlton’s scoreline.
A Pompey loss means Karl Robinson’s side can afford to draw if Charlton don’t win.
United will go into Sunday knowing they have the easiest fixture on paper, with Burton placed 16th in the league.
United will also have fond memories of this fixture after they dispatched the Brewers 5-1 in January just as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was coming back to the club.
The Yellows will have the likes of Alex Gorrin, who’s been a huge part of the dynamic in the middle of the park, and Brandon Barker on loan from Rangers who possesses electric speed both back fit for this game.
James Henry is a player superb form at the moment, spearheading a 3-2 comeback against Shrewsbury on Saturday.
Charlton Athletic face champions Hull City in a bid to overtake Pompey and Oxford for a place in the play-offs.
The Addicks share the same amount of points as the U’s but hold a goal difference of 13, compared to Portsmouth’s 15 and Oxford’s 17 respectively.
Charlton know they will need a miracle to keep their season alive.
If Pompey and United both draw or lose, Charlton can clinch the final spot with all three points against the Tigers.
The team who emerges victorious will join Blackpool, Sunderland, and Lincoln in the semi finals, which will be played towards the end of the month when according to the current government roadmap, fans will be allowed back into stadiums. The maximum will be 25% of the capacity of each stadium.
The final will then be held on the 30th May in front of a suggested 10,000 fans.
