Sheffield Wednesday edge closer to the drop, but the Owls still have time to spread their wings and fly away from relegation

Sheffield Wednesday sit in 23rd place, seven points off of safety with four Championship games remaining as they head into their penultimate home game of the season against Blackburn Rovers.

Two managerial sackings, a points deduction, numerous departures in the summer and a relegation battle all year, this season has been a struggle for Sheffield Wednesday to say the least.

The Owls have shown glimpses of survival instincts of late, a 5-0 rout of Cardiff City two weeks ago a prime example. However, inconsistency has been their worst enemy, particularly as that 5-0 win was followed by a 4-1 defeat at QPR.

They can, however, keep themselves in the hunt for unlikely survival with a win. Defeat on Tuesday and results elsewhere not going their way will see Sheffield Wednesday plummet into League One.

The South Yorkshire side should have some optimism going into Tuesday night’s game against Tony Mowbray’s side, despite the serious predicament that they find themselves in. Rovers have won just two of their last 16 league outings with nothing to play for in the final weeks of the season.

The season has been rather stagnant for the Lancashire outfit, who find themselves in 15th place, astray of any late relegation fears but well away from any shout of a late playoff push; a top-half finish is the upmost ambition the club can have at this stage.

Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray won’t be joined by Wednesday boss Darren Moore in the dugout as the 46-year-old recovers from developing pneumonia after testing positive for COVID-19.

The former West Brom manager joined Wednesday in early March, leaving his role at Doncaster Rovers in the process, and has overseen ten games, in which eight points have been picked up. Health issues with a positive COVID diagnosis and now the development of pneumonia has meant that the recently-appointed manager hasn’t been present for all ten of those games.

Jordan Rhodes is the man in-form going into Tuesday’s clash, the striker scoring four goals in his last eight games, with Josh Windass, Adam Reach and Julian Börner all scoring two goals each during that time.

Despite Blackburn being 2-1 victors against Derby County last time out, Wednesday should see the contest as a strong opportunity to come away with a win. However, if they lose, then there’s a chance that their place back in League One, after nine years away, will be confirmed.
