Atletico Madrid set to break women’s football crowd record against Barcelona

At least 60,000 tickets have been sold with fans jumping at the chance to watch Atletico Madrid Women take on Barcelona Women at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

Atletico Femenino usually play their home games at their club training ground, the Mini Estadio Cerro del Espino, which has an estimated capacity in the region of 3,500.

Due to it being the biggest game in Spanish women’s football, Atletico v Barcelona has been moved to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, where the men’s side play.

After tickets were put on sale, it was announced that the 50,000 tickets made available had sold out forcing the club to release more for the highly anticipated game. Atletico members were able to get tickets for free while the public could watch for as little as €5.

Atletico have won Liga Fememina for the last two seasons while Barcelona won four consecutive titles between the 2011/12 and 2014/15 seasons.

Last time the two met was in the Semi-finals of the Copa de la Reina last month, Los Rojiblancos won that match 2-0 after Ludmila scored a double meaning they meet Real Sociedad in the final in May.

This season, Atletico are six points clear of Barcelona, so this match will be hugely significant in the title-race and is certainly worthy of a sell-out crowd.

The previous Spanish record attendance for a women’s match was set last month when Atleti played Athletic Club of Bilbao in the Copa de la Reina, with 48,121 fans at the stadium.
