How did Mansfield Town get on in the January transfer window?

The Stags were able to secure new signings before the 11 pm deadline on Monday and have seen some players depart the club either on loan or permanent deals.

Nigel Clough’s first transfer window in charge of the club was quite a busy one making four new signings, including George Lapslie signing a two-year deal for the club after his successful loan period at the club.

We’ll be looking at all the ins and outs at the club and how that shapes the Stags going forward into the final three months of the League Two season.

IN

Stephen Quinn – on loan from Burton Albion

The experienced midfielder was Clough’s first signing of the transfer window and arrived at the Stags with some résumé. Playing in the Premier League for Hull City alongside experiencing the 2014 FA Cup final which the Tigers went on to lose 3-2 after extra-time against Arsenal.

Quinn worked under Clough and his staff at Burton Albion during 2018/19 and 2019/20 before the son of legendary Brain Clough left the club due to the pandemic in May.

The 34-year-old brings in experience and tenacity to a relatively young Mansfield midfield consisting of George Lapslie, George Maris and Harry Charsley. Quinn or Clarke can start alongside Lapslie and Maris giving the two younger midfielders the much-needed guidance in the game.

George Lapslie – permanent signing from Charlton Athletic

A few days later, the news broke out from the East Midlands club that Lapslie’s loan move had turned into a permanent stay at the One Call Stadium with the midfielder signing a two-year deal at the club.

He has added a lot into the squad with his constant running, vision and eye for goal. This season, he’s managed six goals in all competitions which is double the amount he managed for Charlton Athletic in the four years he spent in the first team.

Lapslie has been one of the players of the season this campaign as he continues to shine with his midfield brilliance and the quality he brings has shone onto everyone as the Stags have played well since the turn of the year as they look to build on five consecutive wins in League Two.

Jamie Pardington – on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers

The 20-year-old joins the Stags from Wolves’ U23s setup as Clough decided to run with three goalkeepers given the fact that he didn’t want to risk young goalkeeper Maison Campbell being used with very little experience under his belt.

Pardington comes in to make sure that risk isn’t taken if Marek Stech and Aidan Stone get injured. The 6ft 4 goalkeeper joins the amber and blues after loan spells at Dulwich Hamlet, Bath City and Stratford Town.

He’s managed 11 appearances in two seasons for the youth sides at Wolves and has kept two clean sheets conceding 21 goals in the process. A young goalkeeper that will definitely be looking for added experience at the Stags.

Oliver Sarkic – on loan from Blackpool

Another player that has worked under Clough is forward Oliver Sarkic who joins the Stags on loan from Blackpool for the remainder of the campaign.

Last season, the versatile forward endured his best season under the guidance of the Mansfield manager, managing five goals and ten assists in 37 matches for the Brewers.

He brings skill, pace and added versatility across the front three with the Montenegro U21 international able to play anywhere in a front three.

OUT

Alistair Smith – permanent signing for Altrincham

Smith really needed this move away from the One Call Stadium as he searches for permanent first-team football which he is getting with the National League outfit.

He was loaned out to Altrincham in November 2020 and made his stay permanent with the club after a successful two months.

On his day, he has an eye for a pass and brings in height into the midfield which is especially helpful in set pieces and when defending opposition attacks. The move seems perfect for the 21-year-old as he wanted to play more football which he is getting and he is enjoying his football at his new home.

Rollin Menayese – loan signing for Grimsby Town

The 23-year-old joined Mansfield from Bristol Rovers in the summer transfer window with ex-Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan in charge of the club at the time.

Since the Irishman was sacked, Menayese played once under Clough as he wanted to go out on loan somewhere else in search of more minutes.

Grimsby Town suited the centre-back as they were in need of a defender for their squad and acquired his services. Since signing for the Mariners, it hasn’t been the best as they’ve lost twice and gone onto conceded five goals.

Andy Cook – loan signing for Bradford City

Cook, similarly to Menayese, was angry that his opportunities have been limited in the Mansfield squad due to the strike partnership of Jordan Bowery and Jamie Reid.

He secured a move to Yorkshire with Bradford City as he joins the club with an opportunity to gain more minutes in a forward duo with Danny Rowe.

The 30-year-old has only completed 90 minutes on one occasion since Clough’s appointment and it was probably the right move for the striker.

Nicky Maynard – loan signing for Newport County

Maynard has not hit the same heights that he did last season under John Dempster and Graham Coughlan.

Plagued with injuries, the forward hasn’t had a lot of game time under the new manager at the One Call Stadium as was desperate to leave the club.

Newport County signed the striker on loan as they hunted for new attacking options. The 34-year-old decided a move to Wales was the best option if he wanted to get back to his former self.
