FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution Head Coach Caleb Porter alongside captain midfielder Carles Gil, midfielder Jackson Yueill, and forward Leonardo Campana addressed the media via a virtual Press Conference from Bradenton, Florida ahead of their 2025 MLS Preseason.
Those in attendance were Caleb Pongratz of Prost International, Seth Macomber & Sam Minton of The Blazing Musket, Juan David Rozo & Omar Cabrera of Telemundo, Hayden Bird of boston.com, Peyton Doyle of MassLive.com, an un-named representative from NBCS Boston, Marcelo Briones of Meeting Deportivo, Jeff Lemieux & Emma Moneuse of revolutionsoccer.net & Frank Dell’Apa of The Boston Globe.
Caleb Porter opened the press conference with a question from Jeff Lemieux regarding the fresh faces in New England.
He responded by stating, “It was necessary. The club was very successful in 2021, and inconsistent after that. So, we felt in our reflection of the overall body work after those 3 years, 2022, end of 2023, and 2024, to some extent it was the end of the cycle. Every club goes through that, and we felt it was important to refresh the roster and bring in some new blood to enter a new era. To get players that right or wrong were a little bit more the profile that could play in my game model. Every game model is a little different, so we chose to bring in a lot of new players. That’s exciting, I love having new energy, I love having new blood. You could feel it in the first two days that this group is hungry. I felt to some extent that the past group had stagnated and that happens. You see clubs go through that and it stagnates, and you reset the group and build again, so, we’re in that phase, taking it step by step and looking forward to seeing it come together.
He was then asked by Emma Moneuse about the addition of Leo Campana.

He responded by stating, “Leo, we’re very excited about, He’s a true number 9, I prefer a true number 9 in terms of profile, he has done very well in this league, I love that, it’s not a player we have to transition to a new league, he has already been successful in this league, he’s scored goals at a high level, he’s just never had the run of games to take that next step to become one of the best strikers in MLS and I believe he has that potential. He’s got a ton of quality and a ton of confidence. For me, a number 9 has to consistently score goals, you have to have a confident mentality, and if you don’t have that, you’re going to score some goals, but you’re also going to go through inconsistent runs of form. He’s got enough pace to stretch, he’s strong and good in the air, so his hold-up play will help us, that’s an important part of how we play, both those dimensions, being able to stretch, hold, and connect with the 10 and the other midfielders, his work rates good, he’s young, he’s 24. If we went out on the international market and tried to find that profile, we would’ve spent 8-10 million dollars. So, we had to spend a little bit of money to get him, but we feel like it’s a deal based on what we had to spend to get that type of player, that caliber that he has. He’s going to be the guy. Carles is super excited to work with him, to connect with him, they’re already buddies, and that was a big part of adding him as well, the Latin element, being able to connect with Langoni, Tomas, and Carles.
He was then asked by Frank Dell’Apa about what he’d seen from the group so far and how long he thinks it would take to get everybody on the same page.
Coach Porter responded by stating, “You never know how long it’s going to take, but the good news is that we have 5 & 1/2 weeks of preseason so that’s the best time to integrate players. If you have all your guys in preseason, it goes a long way and obviously if you get the right players, then they integrate a lot quicker. If you’re developing guys and play the way you want to play, it’s not always natural. We feel like every player that we’ve added will be much more natural for them to transition and integrate into the way we want to play because they’re already doing those things. They have the qualities and the strengths, but it’s all about every day forming a group, and I said that in the very first talk I had with them. I feel like our talent level has gone up this year and that’s good. It was clear in our last two games that the talent wasn’t where it needed to be if we wanted to be a contender and that’s what we want to be, so, we decided based on some of the evidence and reflecting that we didn’t want to be a team that gets a little better and sneaks into the playoffs, we want to be a contender, so, we chose to put a group together that’s hopefully closer to the top teams in the league and I believe that are in terms of talent, but talent means nothing unless you can form a group and develop a unity, cohesiveness, an understanding, and I think that’s going to be for sure important for us to be successful this year, is to have a really tight group that fights for each other, for the club, for supporters, we weren’t competitive enough consistently last year, didn’t like that, didn’t like at times the amount of goals we gave up, so, we need to be more competitive, every game, we need to better defensively, and I think that comes with the unity and chemistry and spirit that we have. A lot of preseason will be developing a game model and understanding that but a lot of it will be forming the team and developing chemistry and that unity.

He was then asked by Sam Minton about the signing of Allan Oyirwoth and what stood out about him.
He responded by stating, “You can see we got a lot younger. I believe that to play the way that I want to play, and the way that I think is the best way to play, to win games and to hopefully be a contender, I have obviously evidence of that and two teams that have done it and those teams, they trained hard. We had some senior players, for sure, but we also had a nice blend of youth as well. The way that I like to play is there’s an intensity to it on both sides of the ball, and we need guys that are athletic, and we need guys that are fit. So, we felt like again with some of the maturity we had in the team in the past, that we needed to get younger and inject some players that were younger, developmental players, some players that were reaching the prime, and a lot of players that are in the prime, meaning they’re experienced, but also they’re physically still capable of running, working, and training hard.
“Allan [Oyirwoth] was a player that we added as a developmental player. In some ways it’s kind of a little side project for us. He’s a very talented African player, one of the best players coming out of Uganda. I’ve done well with African players and we felt like this was a guy that could eventually become one of the better midfielders in the league with a couple years to develop, instead of getting a guy at 20 or 21 [years old], we get a young player from overseas that’s maybe a little ahead technically and athletically than some of the young players that we have even in our pathway. Then from there, develop the mental and the tactical. He’ll get a lot of games with Revs II. Again, he’s young and a bit raw. But can he eventually become a really special kind of player? That was the thought behind adding him, and who knows, maybe he surprises us, and he’s ready to play with the first team football, in games a little bit sooner than we think.”

Coach was then asked by Hayden Bird about the new signings fit his game model and to expand on his game model and what it related to the center back position more specifically.
He stated, “The teams that I’ve had that have been very successful in the league, they were good defensive teams. I think in both cases, the teams that won MLS Cup, were top three, top five in the league defensively. It bothered me last year again that we weren’t competitive enough consistently in terms of stopping goals, getting clean sheets and being tough to play against. It’s not just the central defenders. It’s a team defending thing, for sure, it starts with the front. I also feel like in reflection and going through really last year, doing a deep dive, a lot of goals were individual mistakes. We felt like we just needed a little bit more athleticism out of our central defenders and a little bit more natural passers, because our defending ends with the center backs. They need to make plays in the box and at times, play with a high line. You look at the DC [United] game as a case in point; that second goal should never happen. We’re going to be up the field, we’re going to play the game an aggressive way, and we’re going to have a high line. So, we can’t have teams just dump predictable balls behind our line and we’re in a foot race with [Christian] Benteke, which we obviously know they’re looking for, and we’re not able to individually manage that situation. So, it’s getting guys that can get in duels, in open spaces, and win those duels. Same thing when we played Columbus, you could kind of see; to try to disrupt them, you’re going to have to be one-versus-one. I said it after the game. When we put our central defenders, and our defenders at times in one-versus-ones, it was difficult. Same thing with [Inter] Miami. We’re up 2-0, and next thing you know, we’re in some one versus-ones in transition, and we just don’t stop those plays.
“So, we feel like in [Brayan] Ceballos and [Mamadou] Fofana that we have two guys that can win duels, that can play with a high line. Then our attack starts with the goalkeeper and the central defenders, so we need guys that can move our team up the field, guys that are clean and that can play through lines, can find passes and not play backwards. I think there were times we had the group playing well, but for me, you are who you are, and ultimately your behavior, especially as a senior player, is going to be what it is. The lack of consistency comes in the form of, it’s not as natural. I think, again, if you pick the right profiles, it’ll hopefully be a little more consistent and more natural.

Coach was then asked by Seth Macomber about the direction the club would be going in in regard to their roster. Currently, the Revolution have 2 Designated Players & 1 U22 player. They can adopt the 3Dp, 3U22 system or the 2DP, 4U22, +$2,000,000 in GAM roster system.
He stated, “It’s probably a question more for [Sporting Director] Curt [Onalfo]. But I’m in the room in all these discussions, and what I would say is its still fluid. We like the flexibility to go either way. Obviously, we have a Designated Player in Tomás Chancalay, who will be back in April, so it makes sense to kind of see how the group comes together and to figure out a path based on that. We like the flexibility of where things are at right now. Even with [Ignatius] Ganago, who’s a very good player, we’ve got some flexibility there, with regards to the loan and the six months that could become a year, and even an option to buy. If he does really well, there’s even [more]flexibility. He could be the third DP, so it makes sense to kind of wait and see a little bit in the early stage of the season before we strategize too much which direction we’re going to go. We want to continue to use every mechanism we have to maximize our roster and our ability to get more and more talented. We’ve added 11 players to date. We’ll probably add a couple more. We’re planning to add 13 [total players], so two more, and one of those is another U22. I won’t tell you about the position at this point, because we’re still obviously honing in on that, and we want to keep our cards close to our chest until we have the negotiation done. But we’ll probably start the year with the two and the four [model], and then from there we have the flexibility to now either add a DP and stay with the three and three or add another U22.”

Coach Porter was then asked by Jeff Lemieux about what he liked about Ignatius Ganago’s playing style and what the incoming players can bring to the team for this upcoming season.
He stated, “There are two guys I think are going to be surprises a little as sleepers in this group. Obviously, everybody’s going to talk about Leo [Campana], but Jackson Yueill I think is going to be a very good soccer player for us. We haven’t had that guy that can kind of really dictate the rhythm and tempo in our midfield, and a guy that’s going to really connect from our backline into our front guys. I’ve watched Jackson [Yueill] for a lot of years, and I feel like he’s a guy that’s very underrated. I think people are going to be very surprised just how much soccer [talent]this guy has. He’s a soccer player, very clean, two-footed, and is going to be a real key rhythm guy for us. Then [Ignatius] Ganago, he’s a Ligue 1 player. We were fortunate to get him, and the only reason we’re able to get him, honestly, the last couple years, he’s gone through some things in terms of having an ACL [injury]a year ago, which he’s fully recovered and back to form and looking really good. You know, those are things that when you look at, obviously, recently, his numbers and minutes, if he was starting every game, never had that injury and bagging goals, we’d never get him. Then he also had a personal issue with his daughter passing away, and so he’s gone through a lot that has allowed us to get him. It’s also allowed him to kind of want a fresh start a little bit. He’s a big-time player. He’s a beast physically, strong, fast, and very technical. He’s an individual game changer. I love the flexibility of being able to use him up top. That means, obviously, until [Tomás] Chancalay comes back, we have a little bit of depth up there. If we end up at times going with the two-front, whether it’s a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2, [Ganago] can play up there next to Leo [Campana], or he can play wide on the left and right. With [Tomás] Chancalay again, not here, us selling Esmir [Bajraktarević], he’ll most likely be on the wings if we play a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. But if Leo [Campana] has to come out, he can shift up top and play the nine. Again, if we play two-front, he can play there. We will probably add another depth piece as well up top, because it’s going to be some time until [Tomás] Chancalay comes back. We don’t want to be in a situation where for the next three months if we play a two-front, we have nobody to sub in. Or if we end up starting [Ignatius] Ganago and [Leo] Campana, we don’t have again, a number nine to come in. There’ll be an announcement the next couple days with a depth piece. “When you look at how we filled out, kind of the final spots, you look at like a Wyatt Omsberg. I mean he’s a Senior Minimum player, but he has experience. He might not be the sexiest signing in the world, but he’s going to be a great death piece for us. It means we’re just a little bit more covered with a guy. Again, he’s a Senior Minimum spot, so it’s a huge value. You have to fill out your depth pieces as well, and then the striker signing will also be in that category as well. He’s a very experienced striker that can, if we play two up front, can sub in if we start with [Ignatius] Ganago and Leo Campana, this player can sub in at the nine and so we’ll announce that in the next couple days.”
After 20 minutes, Leo Campana stepped up to the podium.
Forward Leo Campana was first asked by Jeff Lemieux about his excitement regarding joining the New England Revolution and being a key part of the offense under head coach Caleb Porter.
He stated, “It is exciting, to be honest, to feel this and hear this from [Porter]. Obviously, I made the decision to come here, for my playing time. I know what I am capable of. The only thing I needed is time inside the pitch, and I think here I can find that. What we are constructing here is something really good. We are just waiting for a couple [more]players to come. But the atmosphere and the desire of achieving great things for the team, I think we are going to do really good things this year.”
Building off that question, Emma Moneuse asked about how he’ll look to build his connections with his new teammates, especially Carles Gil.
Campana stated, “To play with Carles [Gil], for me in my position, is the best that I can get, to play with a player like him. He is an amazing player and an amazing person, and I think he has marked something in this league because of his talent. Everyone knows Carles’ talent, and I think he is one of the best players in the league. So, I think we will do really good things together on the pitch.
He then was by Frank Dell’Apa about Carles Gil & comparing him to Lionel Messi & what it’s like to play with players of that caliber.
He stated, “Obviously, Lionel Messi is Lionel Messi. It was great playing with him, and it was a huge dream being in the dressing room, training with him, and seeing him every day. But obviously, as I said, I needed to take a step out of there and to focus on me and to focus on my desires to play, to have more minutes, and to score goals. Obviously, with Carles [Gil], it will be a lot easier to achieve those things.”
Building on the transition, I asked Leo what it’s like to enter a team that struggled offensively last season and look he feels to be joining the attack with other incoming players.
He stated, “I think the team has made a lot of changes this year. The players arriving are young people that want to achieve good things that they can afford with the passion and with the work I think that [Porter] wants. So, I think this year is going to be different from last year, and it will be different for the Revolution and for the people in Boston also.”
Leo was then asked by Sam Minton about the adjustments and how it potentially could be difficult to get off to a good start in the upcoming season.
“Obviously, it takes time. That is why we are in preseason. That is why we are all together here
in Sarasota. I think we have a lot of games before the MLS [season]starts. So, it will be good, those games
prior to MLS, so we can have good connections and be a team. That is the most important thing – to be as
a team and to compete as a team. And obviously, I know we will do good things.”
Leo was then asked by Hayden Bird about what Coach Caleb Porter was looking forward to seeing in regard to Leo Campana’s style of play and what he brings to the squad.
“Well, that is something that I wanted to find for a long time, a coach that has the confidence in me not only to stay in the box, but to come a little bit behind, to ask for the ball, to play, and to have that freedom to play. I think I am capable of doing it. So, yeah, I’m really grateful for Caleb [Porter], he knows about my work ethic and about my mentality. So, I think we are having a really good connection also with all the coaching staff.”
The final question was asked in Spanish by Juan Rozo. He asked what experience Leo can bring from his experiences playing at Inter Miami CF.
He stated, “I had some very beautiful moments at Inter Miami, and I’ll always be grateful to them for. But I’m focused on here in New England, doing things well here, and scoring goals, which is what they brought me here to do. So, that’s where my focus is.”
After 8 minutes, Carles Gil stepped up to the podium.
Jeff Lemieux opened the questions by asking Carles about how excited he is to begin building chemistry with forward Leo Campana.
Carles stated, “Obviously, I know [Campana] from playing in Miami the last few years. He showed what kind of player he is. He’s a very good striker and obviously everyone is very happy to have him here with us. And he speaks Spanish, so it’s easier for both of us. On the first day we had very good chemistry- on the pitch, training, and off the pitch. For sure, he is going to help us a lot.”
He was then asked about his role as a team captain and helping the team come together with a group of new incomers.
Carles stated, “Our goal is clear, it’s to be a competitive team. We weren’t last year. Like you said, there are many new faces. I think it’s a very important preseason for everyone, for the experienced players who’ve been here many years to help these [incoming]players to be happy here and have a good preseason. I hope we can have very good chemistry altogether and build a very good team.”
Carles was then asked by Hayden Bird about the additions of the new attacking players [including Luca Langoni]to give him more options going forward.
He stated, “We have many new players, even in the front of the attack. Luca [Langoni], we obviously know him. He had a very good impact on our team last year. And now with Leo [Campana], Luis Diaz also, some new guys coming like [Ignatius] Ganago, I think we’re going to have a very good attack. But we want to build a very good team on both ends, attacking and defending. We want to be a team that does everything together. If we want to win many games, we know that the attacking players also have to be involved in the defending, in the [chance]creation. But I think we are adding good players and hopefully they can be happy here and play well.”
Frank Dell’Apa then asked about if he was motivated about having a fresh start ahead of the 2025 season.
“I think every preseason is exciting because it’s the beginning, everyone wants to have a good year. Obviously, with a difficult year last year, we had many chances. This is maybe more exciting than other preseasons. But in the end, we want to change everything that we did last year. Starting from the preseason, we’ll have the preseason games to start to be competitive there, to win games. And then focus on the first game in Nashville, which will be difficult. I think we need to start there, to have a good start to the season. Everything is easier when you start in a good way. Last season, we had a very bad start. When that happens, everything is harder.”
Sam Minton then asked about last season’s rough start and how the team will look to be prepared to start the new season.
He stated, “We have five weeks in preseason to do that. I think that’s a long time. We have many training sessions and many preseason games to build a good team and to be ready for Nashville. Obviously, when you have new faces, you need to be together. We’re going to be here one month, so we’ll spend time together and get to know each other. That will be very important for the new players. For me and for the players like Andrew [Farrell] and Matt Polster, we’re trying to help everyone be happy here and help everyone reach his best version.”
An emotional day for #MLSMVP Carles Gil: https://t.co/Epuqxo0eG5 pic.twitter.com/8xCkS1Zm4G
— Major League Soccer (@MLS) December 8, 2021
I then asked Carles about his personal goals ahead of the 2025 season.
“Normally when I start a season, I’m not looking at my stats, my goals, my assists, because I always think that if I can help the team be a winning team, everything is going to come together. When I won [MLS] MVP, I scored four goals. That was one of the lowest goal totals that I had. But I think I helped the team in many other ways, assists. I think I did what the team needed in that moment. That’s my goal. Obviously, I think I need to try to be closer to the goal to make more of an impact in the game. But I try to not think of me and just be the best Carles to help the team.”
Carles was then asked in Spanish by Juan Rozas about how he helps to welcome the new players as a team captain.
He stated, “Well, in the end it’s nothing too unusual. I think we’re all accustomed to having changed teams. It’s always easier when the team comes together in a good way. We’re a group that wants the best for one another, to be winners, to be a competitive team. The new players coming in will find a good environment. We’re a team that wants to improve on what happened last year. In my case, as captain, along with the players who have a lot of experience here too, I want to try to help everyone become accustomed [to the team]so that they can reach their best versions.”
The final question Carles had was in Spanish and asked by Omar Cabrera. He has asked about what goals the Revolution were looking to achieve in preseason.
Carles stated, “The preseasons normally can be very exciting, but this one is a little more exciting because of all the changes that we’ve made, all the new players. We’re all a bit anxious to start the season and fix the negative image of last season. But we have to go step by step, because it’s not easy. There are 29, 30 other teams that are going to want to do the same thing- win games, be competitive. It’s step by step. We’ll focus on the preseason, which is very important when there are so many new players. We’ll get to know one another well. Hopefully we can build something special and accomplish important things for our club.”
After 12 minutes, midfielder Jackson Yueill stepped up to the podium.
Jeff Lemieux had the first question regarding spending his entire career with San Jose and starting a new journey with the New England Revolution.
He stated, “I had a great time in San Jose, but for me personally I felt like it was time for a change. I wanted to, kind of, explore the other side of the [league], the east side. You don’t really get to play as many teams [in the Eastern Conference]. The Revs, I think, are a great organization and a great fit for me. I am really excited to get the season underway and kind of get a new scope of the landscape. I am excited to play against different teams a little bit more and play with new players. I have been with the Earthquakes for a long time, but I am really excited for this new challenge and opportunity.”
He was then asked by Emma Moneuse about how he will use his experience and wisdom on and off the pitch to help the younger players on the roster.
He stated, “I think on the Earthquakes, we also had a lot of young guys and a lot of Academy players who maybe didn’t get a lot of minutes, but who were up and coming, and I think they relied a lot on that. I think in the last couple years, I was really able to mature and develop in a way that I could help lead them and guide them a little bit. And then here as well, there are a lot of experienced players who are joining the team, and a lot of new players to MLS and to the team. So, it’s about just day-to-day, how do I act, how do I perform, work rate and effort, what do I give that they can watch visually, and then the words that I can help. Any type of guidance I can give them on the field, off the field, what MLS is kind of like with the long season, the travel, and everything like that. So, I think it is about trying to listen to them, get to know them really well, and whatever they need I’m here to help, and hopefully vice versa.
Jackson was then asked by Frank Dell’Apa whether he has something to prove and showcase his ability further.
Jackson stated, “Definitely. I think last year definitely left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, personally and team wise, and I am looking forward to righting that failure that last year was. I definitely think that the players on this team definitely will benefit me. There are some phenomenal players that were already here, and some amazing ones that have been brought in. I am really excited to get to know them on and off the field, and I think we are going to have some amazing chemistry. I think all of us are going to be able to thrive under this system and have a great year with each other.”

— Major League Soccer (@MLS) April 30, 2023
Jackson was then asked by Hayden Bird about how he sees his role within the current midfield system of the Revolution roster.
Jackson stated, “I guess you could categorize me as a bit of a box-to-box player. I definitely think I have flexibilities, dropping in lower and being a little bit of a holding midfielder. I think speaking with Caleb [Poter] and seeing what is, kind of, here, I think it is definitely helping build up the play into the attack in third, control the tempo, control the momentum, and set up the attacking play. Then, of course, I think what I can bring a little differently is arriving to the box, good timing, goal scoring opportunities, and assist creative playing as well. So, hopefully I can explore a little bit more of that this year, especially with the phenomenal attackers that I will have around me. So, I think for sure in the middle of the field, but hopefully progressing with the ball as well, is something that I can do a lot this year.”
Jackson was then asked by Seth Macomber about the back-and-forth trades between New England & San Jose and whether he and other players discussed anything during the offseason.
“Yeah, it was little weird, almost like a switch to a degree. I guess some midfielders went there, some came here, and some defenders went there, some came here. But, yeah, I think it is, hopefully, a good opportunity for everyone involved. I am really excited about this team and this culture. I think you look at players like Carles [Gil] and [Alhassan] Yusuf in the middle, I am really excited to play with them. And then obviously, Leo [Campana] who came in as a striker, he has great qualities and amazing finishing capabilities. And of course, you add in a couple other new players who I haven’t quite seen yet, but I am excited to get to know them and play with them. I think the team and the whole organization is all-around winning and setting a standard, and that’s something that I was really excited about and something that I want to help maintain and set higher. I think that they have players here who are very talented and very good, and I hope to come in help everyone as best I can.”

Closing out the press conference, Jackson was asked by Sam Minton about his first impressions on head coach Caleb Porter and what he noticed about him as a head coach.
He stated, “[Porter] is a guy who has got a plan. He knows how to win; he has done it in the past. And I think he brings a great demeanor quality-speaking and trying to get everyone involved. Of course, it is very early, but he wants everyone to be on the same page. He wants to play a progressive attacking style. He wants to have the ball, he wants to press well, and all the things that I appreciate in my qualities and being able to do on the field. I think he is a great coach. The first couple days in, I am really excited to learn more under him as this preseason goes along, and to get the season ready.”
After 8 minutes, Jackson’s time in the press conference concluded.
The total runtime of the press conference was 1 hour & 15 minutes.
