Rhode Island FC obliterate Miami FC 8-1

SMITHFIELD, RIRhode Island FC (12-15-7, 51 pts.) obliterated Miami FC (3-2-29, 11 pts.) 8-1 on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 8:00 p.m. ET at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island to a sold-out crowd of 4,500.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Koke Vegas starting in the net with a backline of Frank Nodarse (left), Karifa Yao (center) and Grant Stoneman (right). The midfield consisted of Morris Duggan (left) Marc Ybarra (left center mid), Zachary Herivaux (central), Clay Holstad (right center mid) and Stephen Turnbull (right). The forward roles were manned by Noah Fuson (left) and JJ Williams (right).

Rhode Island had 2 players out due to injury. They included Albert Dikwa (leg) and Isaac Angking (R-ACL).

The match began with Miami FC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into RIFC’s defensive third by passing out of the back.

Entering the 10th minute, RIFC took the 1-0 advantage.

Following a long through-ball by Grant Stoneman, the ball was collected by forward JJ Williams, who then took on a defender and played the ball forward to find forward Noah Fuson for the simple finish to make it 1-0.

Just 6 minutes later, RIFC added to their lead.

Forward Noah Fuson managed to find forward JJ Williams in-behind for a breakaway. Williams went for a panenka chip-shot, stumbled, and still managed to score to make it 2-0.

RIFC had a chance to add to their lead when Jojea Kwizera’s right footed shot was saved by Miami FC goalkeeper #31 Felipe Rodriguez.

Entering the 31st minute, RIFC added to their lead once again.

Midfielder Zachary Herivaux sent the ball centrally to find midfielder Marc Ybarra for the one-time right footed finish into the bottom left corner to make it 3-0.

RIFC had yet another chance as Clay Holstad’s effort from six yards out in the 33rd minute was met with a catch save by Miami FC goalkeeper #31 Felipe Rodriguez.

Entering the 37th minute, drama ensued as Rhode Island FC were granted a penalty kick after a foul in the box by midfielder #8 Gabriel Cabral.

Forward JJ Williams stepped up and buried the penalty kick into the bottom left corner to make it 4-0 to RIFC.

Entering the 45+1 minute, Miami FC pulled one back.

After a poorly deflected ball off the leg of defender Grant Stoneman, the ball fell kindly into the penalty area for forward #19 Mikey Lawrence to pounce and unleash a shot into the top-right corner from close range to make it 5-1.

Less than two minutes later, RIFC added a 5th goal.

Defender Frank Nodarse managed to find midfielder Zachary Herivaux for a one-time through-ball towards JJ Williams. Miami FC goalkeeper #31 Felipe Rodriguez charged out of the net and was rounded by forward JJ Williams, who then slotted it home for his hat-trick and RIFC’s 5th goal of the match.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with RIFC ahead with a commanding 5-1 lead.

 

Prior to the start of the second half, both teams made changes. Miami FC head coach Marcello Alves made his first change of the match by replacing defender #15 Mujeeb Murana with midfielder #2 Allan Santos da Paixão. RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his first change by replacing midfielder Clay Holstad with midfielder Amos Shapiro-Thompson.

The second half began with RIFC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Miami’s defensive third.

In the 47th minute, RIFC forward JJ Williams was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 54th minute, RIFC added to their lead again.

Following a poor clearance, the ball popped out to defender Frank Nodarse, who then elected for a finesse shot into the bottom right corner to make it 6-1 RIFC.

In the 57th minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made two changes by replacing midfielder Zachary Herivaux and forward JJ Williams with midfielder Jack Panayotou and forward Albert Dikwa.

In the 64th minute, Miami FC defender #18 Junior Palacios was issued a yellow card.

Following the foul, Miami FC head coach Marcello Alves made two changes by replacing midfielders #8 Gabriel Cabral and #50 Roberto Molina with midfielder #23 Rocco Genzano and forward #7 Luis Pedro.

Less than one minute later, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made one change by replacing defender Grant Stoneman with defender Stephen Turnbull.

In the 71st minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made yet another change by replacing forward Noah Fuson with midfielder Joe Brito.

Entering the 75th minute, RIFC scored their 7th.

Midfielder Joe Brito managed to find forward Albert Dikwa in-behind for the one-time right footed finish into the bottom left corner to make it 7-1 to Rhode Island FC.

In the 77th minute, Miami FC head coach Marcello Alves made yet another change by replacing defender #18 Junior Palacios with defender #3 Jordan Ayimbila.

Less than two minutes later, Miami FC forward #19 Michael Lawrence was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 82nd minute, RIFC got their 8th.

Midfielder Jack Panayotou managed to find midfielder Jojea Kwizera wide open the left flank. He took a left-footed shot that snuck under goalkeeper #31 Felipe Rodriguez for Rhode Island FC’s 8th goal of the match.

Following the goal, Miami FC head coach Marcello Alves made his final change of the match by replacing midfielder #5 Joey DeZart with forward #35 Sebatien Joseph.

In the 86th minute, Miami FC midfielder #23 Rocco Genzano was issued a yellow card.

Just two minutes later, Miami FC defender #3 Jordan Ayimbila and RIFC midfielder Amos Shapiro-Thompson were both issued yellow cards.

After the 90 minutes, the match concluded with Rhode Island cruising to their 8-1 victory

RIFC have clinched a spot in the USL Championship Playoffs.

They currently sit in 5th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

Rhode Island FC (11-15-7, 48 pts.) will face Indy Eleven (14-9-10, 51 pts.) at IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium in the first round of the USL Championship Playoffs. The match will kick off on Saturday, November 2nd at 1:00pm or 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
