Surrey continued their unbeaten start to their championship campaign by picking up their second win of the season and moving to the top of Division One after beating Somerset by three wickets at the Kia Oval.
After bowling out the visitors for 207, with Jordan Clark taking 4-52, Surrey were left 237 for victory. Thanks to 102 from Ryan Patel they reached their target with seven wickets down when Patel was dismissed Surrey were 172-4, but wickets fell at regular intervals as Surrey chased down their target, but thanks to an unbeaten 487 from Ben Foakes, the home side got over the line.
Warwickshire picked up their first win, with a ten wicket victory over Essex at Edgbaston.
Essex never recovered from being bowled out for 168, despite a fighting 80 from Tom Westley. Off spinner Danny Briggs took 4-31 with Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Liam Norwell taking five wickets between them. Warwickshire replied with a total of 385, thanks to 170 from Michael Burgess. Essex faired better second time around, but were bowled out for 323 with Simon Harmer finishing unbeaten on 75.
The home side were left the simple task to get 107 to win which openers Alex Davies and Dom Sibley comfortably negotiated.
Hampshire are second in the table, seven points behind Surrey after an innings and 51 run victory against Kent at Canterbury.
Despite Kent making 305 in their first innings with Daniel Bell-Drummond hitting 149, Hampshire replied with a massive 652-6 declared with Liam Dawson hitting 171, Ben Brown 157 and captain James Vince 111 to set up victory with Kent getting bowled out for 296 with Ben Compton making 89 and Kyle Abbott picking up 5-29.
Lancashire made it two wins out of two with a comfortable innings and 57 runs victory over Gloucestershire at Old Trafford.
The home sides first innings total of 556-7 declared was indebted to Josh Bohannon’s 231 and Dane Vilas’s century.
Gloucestershire were bowled out for 252 and 247 with Hasan Ali taking six wickets in the first innings and Zafar Gohar four.
In the only other match in Division One at Northampton the match between Northamptonshire and Yorkshire finished in a draw with Northants facing a stiff target of 499 for victory, the home side held on for a draw on 318-7 with Will Young making 96.
In Division Two, Middlesex picked up their first win of the campaign after completing an innings and 82 run victory over previously unbeaten Glamorgan at Cardiff.
The Welsh side never recovered after being dismissed for 122 in their first innings. Middlesex responded with 336 with John Simpson making an undefeated 104 and half centuries from Mark Stoneman and Toby Roland-Jones.
Glamorgan were shot out for 132 in their second innings with Roland- Jones doing the damage this time with the ball by taking 5-40 to finish with match figures of 8-74.
Nottinghamshire moved to the top of the table after a convincing innings and 141 run victory against Durham at Chester-le-Street, to give Notts their second win of the season.
Durham made 230 in their first innings with Liam Patterson-White picking up 5-54. Notts made a more than useful 488-9 declared in reply with a magnificent unbeaten double century of 225 from Ben Slater and a century from Lyndon James giving Notts a massive first innings lead of 258.
The hosts were skittled out for just 117 with three wickets apiece from Luke Fletcher and James Pattinson as Durham still await their first win in the championship.
Worcestershire picked up their first victory of the season with a crushing innings and 34 run win over Sussex at New Road.
The home side posted an imposing total of 491 in their first innings with Brett D’Oliveira finish undefeated on 169. Despite 109 from Cheteshwar Pujara, Sussex were bowled out for 269 with Joe Leach taking 4-60.
Sussex were forced to follow on and second time around were dismissed for 188 to leave Sussex rooted at the bottom of the table
At Leicester, Derbyshire moved up to second in the table after defeating Leicestershire by an innings and 68 runs.
The victory was set up by another superb knock from Derbyshire’s Shan Masood. The experienced Pakistani opening batsman hit 219 to go with his 239 he made against Sussex in the previous game. Derbyshire’s total of 531 also included a century from Mattie McKiernan in between Leicestershire’s totals of 213 and 250.
