Bundesliga matchday 10: When Bayern blew it

0

First firings, eight goal spreads, derbies full of fireworks, all that and more in matchday 10 of the Bundesliga.

In Frankfurt, Bayern Munich was coming off a drab match in the Pokal as manager Niko Kovac returned to his former club. Unlike last season’s convincing win, Eintracht went nuts scoring at will for a 5-1 win. Kovac would lose his job the within 24 hours of the match.

Things really were turned on their head as referee Markus Schmidt called a penalty. VAR was brought into play and while it showed that the foul was outside of the box what was considered a yellow card foul by Jerome Boateng was changed to red.

From there two goals from Filip Kostic and Djibril Sow were followed by Robert Lewandowski’s 14th goal and one in each of the 10 matches of the Bundesliga season. Three second-half goals from David Abraham, Martin Hinteregger, and Goncalo Paciencia meant that Niko Kovac will now be on the unemployment line as Bayern finished the matchday in fourth with Eintracht in seventh.

German Reunification is known to have come across on November 9 in 1989 as the Berlin Wall fell down. Days ahead of the 30th anniversary were finally gifted with the first Berlin derby in the Bundesliga and the hosts Union Berlin came through with a memorable 1-0 win.

The pre-match pyrotechnics were incredible. The fan choreography was involving the entire stadium and from the away fans. Through all of this was a football match. Whilst a cagey affair, it was in the 90th minute Sebastian Polter put away a goal that will live long in the memory of Union fans as they moved to 14th in the table within a point of Hertha.

Both the likes of FC Koln and Fortuna Dusseldorf knew that the fans demanded wins in their derby. A win would benefit either in relegation survival and a 2-0 win goes to the hosts Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Each team has been trying their best to stay away from the relegation zone but after the defeat to lower league opposition in the Pokal there was more pressure on Koln to rebound. A conceded late first-half penalty by Billy Goats was converted but the second was worse. A clearance meant that Erik Thommy was able to out race everyone to go one on one with the keeper and put away the second goal of the match.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga

RB Leipzig have been on a tear. Midweek they torched Wolfsburg 6-2 and in the Bundesliga vs Mainz it was much the same. A 8-0 home victory lead by Timo Werner’s hat-trick of both goals and assists.

Hoffenheim continued their strong streak of wins by dispatching Paderborn 3-0 to move to ninth.

Borussia Dortmund followed up their win in the Pokal with a win over Wolfsburg 3-0 to go to second in the table.

In a local derby Leverkusen was down to ten men as they fell to table topping Borussia Monchengladbach.

Werder Bremen will be wishing they held on as they conceded a late equaliser to ten man Freiburg which kept the Black Forest team in the European race and Bremen in the limbo zone.

Schalke may not be top of the Bundesliga but a nervy 3-2 win over Augsburg mean the Royal Blues are in the European places while Augsburg find themselves now in the relegation zone.

Player of the Week

When you score a hat trick it is hard to overlook Timo Werner who added three assists to his goals.
