Solskjaer appointed Manchester United caretaker manager

Manchester United have announced that club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season.

The former United striker, who famously won the 1999 Champions League for the Red Devils with the final kick of the game, will take the reigns at the club with immediate effect after Jose Mourinho was sacked yesterday.

In a statement released by the club, Solskjaer talking about his appointment said: “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”

Solskjaer has previous experience managing in the Premier League when the 45-year-old took over at Cardiff City in January 2014, where he was unable to guide the Bluebirds to league safety as the Welsh side were relegated under the Norwegian legend.

As well as Solskjaer returning to Manchester, former first-team coach and assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, Mike Phelan, has also been confirmed to be returning to the club as the Norwegian’s assistant for the remainder of the season.

Solskjaer’s first game in charge as Manchester United boss will be away from home to his old team Cardiff on Saturday night.
