Seattle Reign FC 2
Utah Royals FC 1

Lumen Field – Seattle, WA
NWSL Regular Season
Seattle Reign FC hosted Utah Royals FC on Friday night.
Reign original Lauren Barnes announced her retirement this past week, setting the stage for an emotional home regular season finale. Barnes’ career includes three NWSL Shields with the Reign and statistical standards for matches that are the bar for longevity in the league.
To officially clinch a playoff spot, Seattle still needed a single point or points dropped by North Carolina in their final two matches.
Utah is already eliminated from the playoffs, but has had an interesting second half of the season.

Seattle Reign FC vs Utah Royals FC
Utah’s Bianca St. Georges nearly got the Royals on the board in the opening moments. Racing through the Seattle defense she got a solid strike that challenged Reign keeper Claudia Dickey. Dickey would make the save, but it set the tone for the early going as the visitors would come out pressing.
Both sides would push forward and create chances in the first half. Set pieces for both would lead to real chances, but both defenses would manage to clear and kept the match goalless.
Seattle midfielder Ainsley McCammon would score in first half stoppage time. A Maddie Dahlien cross to the far post set up a far post run by McCammon, who would head in the match’s first goal. For the eighteen year old McCammon it was her first professional goal.

The early stages of the second half were mostly Seattle on the front foot. However, the second goal did not come right away.
Royals forward Paige Monaghan would level the match in the 61st minute. A left foot shot from the top of the box by Monaghan past Dickey was her reward for a long run through the Reign defense.
The hosts would get the lead back a few minutes later. Sofia Huerta would convert a VAR given penalty.
Utah would press for the late equalizer, pushing the Reign defense. A few set pieces created dangerous situations in front of Dickey, but Reign defenders were able to clear or prevent clean looks on goal.
Seattle would see out the match, holding on to the 2-1 lead and securing three points.
It was an emotional night for the hosts, but they took all that Utah could throw at them.
Reign midfielder and original Jessica Fishlock announced her international retirement from Wales this week. She mentioned a desire to continue for the Reign next season prior to the match.
Reign defender Hanna Glas announced her retirement prior to the match.
The three points move Seattle to third in the table pending other round 25 matches this weekend.
