With none of the clubs having to leave the city and two London derbies on the same today, our London League Table has finally sprung to life with only Arsenal yet to start their campaign.
West Ham extended their run of months without a home win dating back to February after Tottenham left the London Stadium with an emphatic 3-0 win.
Three unlikely scorers Ismaili Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Micky van de Ven scored second half goals and Tomas Soucek was sent off with the score at 1-0 to Spurs. Hammers manager Graham Potter has now failed to win any of the first eight home games in his tenure at Stratford.
With another derby next week, at home to Crystal Palace, the writing may be on the wall of the pedestrian tunnel from Pudding Mill Lane station to the stadium for Potter.
Palace could only draw 0-0 at home to promoted Sunderland who are finding the capital’s clubs to be a useful source of early points, having already beaten Brentford and West Ham.
Arsenal made Ange Postecogliu’s return to fotball managment a nightmare with a 3-0 home win over Nottingham Forest and top the table pending Sunday’s results with his former club Tottenham neatly wedged into second. Both have nine points from four games.
Martin Zubimendi scored twice for the Gunners with Viktor Gyokeres scoring their second.
Prost Midlands Editor Scott Eley observed:
“Arsenal made tidy work of Ange Postecoglou’s Forest returning after the international break, barely having to peak into full rhythm with two goals from Zubimendi and Gyokeres.
“With the disruption Forest had faced in preparation, I don’t think there is too much to look into other than Arsenal can only beat what is in front of them.
“However, with Arteta choosing to leave key names out of the starting line up, this does allude to Gunners having a stronger squad to realise their title credentials.
“Arsenal fans will be excited that Noni Madueke picked up where he left off from his exploits with England and Eze got his first assist on full home debut. They’ll also be hoping that Zubimendi’s goal contributions don’t stop here, following a worldie of an opening goal.
“As for Forest, this was almost a free hit of a game for Postacoglu having only taken one training session with his full squad. There were barely any signs of Ange ball so eyes will be on their midweek Carabao cup game against Swansea away to see some changes in play.”
The Bees participated in Saturday’s second derby and held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw. Fabio Carvalho scored in second half stoppage time to stop the Blues going top of the EPL overnight.
Kevin Schade had scored a superb individual goal to give Brentford the lead before Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo scored second half goals to reverse that.
So often punished by the concession of late goals, Fulham have been benefitting from them this season. This continued when a bizarre header by Gabriel Gudmundsson in stoppage time gave the Cottagers a 1-0 home win over Leeds United.
They move into the top half of the table along with Palace, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal. Brentford are 12th and the Hammers 18th.
The results affected the London Derby Leaue Table as below:
In just two games West Ham have conceded more than half the goals scored in London derbies.
Tottenham take an early lead with just one game played while Chelsea have started their season with four straight derbies and remain unbeaten.
There are more derbies to come next Saturday after a midweek of European action for some.
Arsenal and Spurs face La Liga opposition on Tuesday in Athletic Bilbao and Villareal in the Champions League, respectively, but Chelsea face the more daunting trip to Bavaria to face Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Come the weekend, Fulham host Brentford in a West London derby while West Ham await Crystal Palace in a vital game. especially for the home side.
Spurs travel to Brighton. Chelsea head to Old Trafford to play beleaguered Manchester United
