Revolution collapse after 2-0 halftime lead, lose 5-3 to New York Red Bulls

FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution (6-7-9, 25 pts) were defeated 5-3 versus New York Red Bulls (9-6-8, 33 pts) on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Sports Illustrated Stadium to a crowd of 15,000.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle. Forward Leo Campana played the ball backwards to goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič, who then elected to launch the ball into New York’s defensive third.

New England had the first major chance of the match when a cross into the area by Brandon Bye went high past the back post, was bicycle kicked by Peyton Miller toward Leo Campana, who then elected a volley attempt that missed just wide of the net.

Less than a minute later, RBNY had their first chance when Emil Forsberg won the ball in the midfield, drove to the net, pushed over Tanner Beason, and sent a shot that went high over the net.

Entering the 5th minute, New England took the lead.

Following a through-ball by Alhassan Yusuf toward Langoni and Campana on the left flank, the ball was poorly defended by RBNY and fell kindly for Leo Campana to pass it into the bottom right corner for the easy finish to make it 1-0.

Leo Campana had yet another chance to score in the 11th minute when a delivery into the area by Luca Langoni was brought down but goalkeeper Carlos Coronel claimed it before Campana could make an effort towards goal.

Red Bull had two quick chances to score in the 12th minute when Wilkerman Carmona had an effort blocked away by Keegan Hughes. The ball then fell for Mohammed Sofo, who sent his effort high over the bar.

Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting had a chance of his own in the 17th minute when Ronald Donkor found him open in the penalty area, however, he sent his shot high over the bar.

Luca Langoni had a fantastic long distant curler in the 19th minute when he drove down the center of the park and took a shot that was met with a spectacular diving save by Carlos Coronel out for a corner kick.

Entering the 21st minute, New England thought they had added to their lead after a corner kick effort into the area by Carles Gil, the ball was deflected and finished home by Leo Campana, however, Campana was found guilty of a handball and the scoreline remained 1-0.

Entering the 29th minute, New England added to their lead.

Forward Luca Langoni had an effort that was laid off in the area by Leo Campana and he shot it off the left post, back off of Kyle Duncan and into his own net to make it 2-0 to New England.

New York’s next chance came in the 35th minute when a distant effort by Wikelman Carmona was caught comfortably by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

Red Bull probably had the biggest chance of the match when a bad giveaway in the back by Aljaž Ivačič was won by Mohammed Sofo, laid off for Daniel Edelman which sent Tanner Beason & Keegan Hughes onto the floor, however, Edelman shot his effort directly at Ivačič. Extremely lucky for New England.

Emil Forsberg had another amazing chance to pull one back for Red Bulls in the 42nd minute when a cross into the area by Omar Valencia was deflected by Carmona, fell for Forsberg and he sent his volleyed effort over the bar.

New York had yet another chance in the 44th minute when an effort into the area by Mohammed Sofo wen though the box and was deflected out for a goal kick.

In the 45+3 minute, Revolution forward Leo Campana was issued a yellow card for a foul on Red Bull defender Omar Valencia.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with New England ahead 2-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first change of the match by replacing Peyton Miller with Will Sands.

The second half kicked off with New York starting from the center circle. Emil Forsberg played the ball backwards to Sean Nealis who elected to have Red Bull build out of the back to begin the second half.

In the 52nd minute, Red Bulls midfielder Wikelman Carmona was issued a yellow card for a foul on midfielder Matt Polster.

Entering the 55th minute, Red Bulls pulled one back.

Midfielder Daniel Edelman’s effort from outside the area was deflected off the leg of Keegan Hughes and into his own net to make it 2-1.

Kyle Duncan had a chance to pull another back for Red Bulls when his volleyed effort went just wide of the net.

In the 60th minute, Revolution defender Brayan Ceballos was issued a yellow card.

Following the foul, Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz made his first three changes of the match by replacing Kyle Duncan, Daniel Edelman, & Wikelman Carmona with Alexander Hack, Julian Hall, & Wiktor Bogacz

Less than three minutes later, Revolution defender Brayan Ceballos went down with an injury. Ceballos could not continue and was replaced by Wyatt Omsberg,

Entering the 70th minute, Red Bulls leveled the scoreline.

Midfielders Mohammed Sofo, Ronald Donkor & Emil Forsberg combined to find Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting open in the area to bury it past Aljaž Ivačič to make it 2-2.

In the 72nd minute, Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz made his final two changes by replacing Mohammed Sofo & Omar Valencia with Raheem Edwards & Dennis Gjengaar.

Entering the 73rd minute, Red Bulls took the lead.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg took a curling effort that was buried into the bottom right corner to make it 3-2 to New York.

After the goal, Revolution goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič was issued a yellow card.

Following the card, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his third and fourth changes by replacing Brandon Bye & Luca Langoni with Ilay Feingold & Tomás Chancalay.

In the 76th minute, Red Bulls defender Noah Eile was issued a yellow card for fouling Tomás Chancalay.

New England’s next chance came from the ensuing freekick by Carles Gil that was bobbled by Carlos Coronel & out for a corner kick.

In the 79th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his final change of the match by replacing Tanner Beason with Luis Díaz.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had a chance to score in the 80th minute when he got in-behind and had an effort that was saved by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

Entering the 83rd minute, New York added another goal.

Midfielder Ronald Donkor found forward Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting in the penalty area for him to put his shot past Aljaž Ivačič to make it 4-2 to Red Bulls.

Less than a minute later, New England had a chance to score when Tomás Chancalay missed from close range.

In the 86th minute, New York were given a penalty kick. Due to the foul, defender Keegan Hughes was given a yellow card.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg stepped up and buried his penalty kick to make it 5-2.

Red Bulls had another amazing chance to score in the 88th minute but the effort by Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting was sent high over the bar

Entering the 90+2 minute, New England pulled one back.

Defender Alexander Hack had a bad giveaway after a chest trap and it led to forward Leo Campana wide open in the box to finish off a cross inside the penalty area to make it 5-3.

In the 90+4 minute, Revolution forward Luis Díaz was issued a yellow card for delaying a restart.

Ilay Feingold had a long distant effort in the 90+6 minute that snuck just wide of the net.

After the 90+7 minutes, the match concluded with New York securing the come from behind 5-3 victory.

With the result, New England remain in 11th place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
