Sam Surridge’s hat-trick propels Nashville to 3-2 victory over New England

FOXBOROUGH, MA– New England Revolution (6-5-6, 23 pts) were defeated 3-2 versus Nashville SC (9-5-4, 32 pts) on Wednesday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium to a crowd of 10,000.

Caleb Porter tonight is coaching his 400th game of his professional career.

The match kicked off with Nashville SC starting from the center circle as they elected to kick the ball directly out of bounds to begin the match.

In the 11th minute, Nashville SC had thought that they had earned a penalty kick, but after VAR, not goal was given.

Entering the 15th minute, New England took the lead.

Midfielder Carles Gil found forward Tomás Chancalay over the top with a through-ball that Chancalay took down and volleyed home past Joe Willis to make it 1-0.

In the 20th minute, Nashville SC midfielder Alex Muyl was issued a yellow card for fouling Carles Gil.

Nashville’s first major chance came in the 23rd minute when a long-distant shot by Jonathan Pérez struck the post and went wide for a throw-in.

Hany Mukhtar then had a chance just two minutes later when his long effort was met with a diving save by Aljaž Ivačič.

Sam Surridge had a massive chance to score in the 27th minute when he was chased down by Brayan Ceballos and was tackled from behind & out for a corner kick.

New England’s next chance came in the 31st minute when Tomás Chancalay’s effort from outside the area was met with a comfortable save by Joe Willis.

In the 38th minute, Revolution forward Maxi Urruti was issued a yellow card for incidentally striking Jeisson Palacios in the neck while contesting a header.

Nashville had yet another amazing opportunity in the 42nd minute when a shot by Hany Mukhtar was deflected off of Tanner Beason and struck the crossbar / post.

Entering the 45+1 minute, Nashville leveled the scoreline.

Following a cross into the area by Jonathan Pérez, the ball found the head of Sam Surridge, who over-jumped Brayan Ceballos to level the scoreline 1-1.

After 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with the scoreline level at 1-1.

The second half kicked off with New England starting from the center circle and swiftly advancing the ball into Nashville’s defensive third.

Maxi Urruti had the first chance of the second half when his header less than one minute into the half went just wide of the net.

In the 48th minute, Nashville SC midfielder Edvard Tagseth was issued a yellow card for fouling midfielder Carles Gil.

Less than a minute later, in the 49th minute, New England took the lead.

Following a freekick taken by Tomás Chancalay the ball was headed home by Brayan Ceballos for his first career MLS goal.

Less than one minute later, Nashville leveled the scoreline.

Following a delivery into the area by Hany Mukhtar, the ball was headed by Daniel Lovitz to make it 2-2. Intially, New England thought the play was deemed offsides after Surridge tapped it in on the goal line, however, they deemed the ball was already in. 2-2.

Entering the 54th minute, Nashville SC were given a penalty kick after Mamadou Fofana took down Hany Mukhtar in the penalty area.

The ensuing penalty kick taken by Sam Surridge was buried in the top left corner to make it 3-2 to Nashville.

Just 6 minutes later, in the 57th minute, Nashville SC forward Jonathan Pérez was issued a yellow card for fouling Tanner Beason.

In the 64th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first two changes of the match by replacing Maxi Urruti and Mamadou Fofana with Leo Campana & Wyatt Omsberg.

Just 5 minutes later, in the 70th minute, both teams made changes. Nashville SC head coach BJ Callaghan made his first two changes by replacing Alex Muyl & Christopher Applewhite with Jack Maher & Ahmed Qasem. Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his third change by replacing Tanner Beason with Luca Langoni.

Entering the 80th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his final two changes of the match by replacing with Jackson Yueill & Ilay Feingold for Luis Díaz & Brandon Bye.

Nashville’s next chance came in the 82nd minute when a delivery into the area was punched out of the area by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič..

New England’s next chance came two minutes later when a delivery into the area by Brandon Bye just missed Tomas Chancalay. The ball was headed away for a corner kick.

In the 84th minute, Nashville SC head coach BJ Callaghan made his third change of the match by replacing Sam Surridge with Teal Bunbury.

Nashville had a massive chance to score in the 85th minute when Teal Bunbury set up Jonathan Pérez for the shot inside the penalty area, however, he sent his effort wide of the net.

In the 86th minute, Revolution midfielder Alhassan Yusuf was issued a yellow card for fouling Hany Mukhtar.

Just 6 minutes later, in the 90+1 minute, Nashville SC head coach BJ Callaghan made his fourth change of the match by replacing Edvard Tagseth with Bryan Acosta.

New England’s next chance came in the 90+4 minute when a corner kick delivery by Carles Gil was headed away. Play was then stopped due to a head injury to Jeisson Palacios.

After the 90+9 minutes, the match concluded with Nashville SC holding on to the 3-2 victory.

With the result, New England drop to 11th place in the MLS Eastern Conference. New England loses back-to-back matches for the first time since March.
