RIFC & Loudoun United battle to second scoreless draw this season

SMITHFIELD, RIRhode Island FC (11-14-7, 47 pts.) drew 0-0 versus the Loudoun United FC (11-9-12, 42 pts.) on Saturday.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island to a crowd of 4,500.

The team started their lineup in a 3-5-2 formation with goalkeeper Koke Vegas starting in the net with a backline of Frank Nodarse (left), Karifa Yao (center) and Grant Stoneman (right). The midfield consisted of Morris Duggan (left) Marc Ybarra (left center mid), Zachary Herivaux (central), Clay Holstad (right center mid) and Stephen Turnbull (right). The forward roles were manned by Mark Doyle (left) and JJ Williams (right).

Rhode Island had 2 players out due to injury. They included Albert Dikwa (leg) and Isaac Angking (R-ACL).

The match began with Loudoun United starting from the center circle and immediately progressing the ball into Rhode Island FC’s defensive third.

RIFC had the first chance of the match in the 7th minute when Marc Ybarra’s corner kick effort was headed just over the cross bar.

The next chance for RIFC came in the 23rd minute when Marc Ybarra’s headed effort was met with a diving stop by goalkeeper #23 Hugo Fauroux.

In the 27th minute, Loudoun United forward #30 Abdellatif Aboukoura was issued a yellow card.

RIFC then had a chance from the ensuing freekick by forward JJ Williams which was caught by goalkeeper #23 Hugo Fauroux.

Loudoun’s first major chance came in the 29th minute when midfielder #6 Kwame Awuah’s effort went wide of the net.

Just three minutes later, Loudoun United midfielder #20 Drew Skundrich was issued a yellow card.

In the 43rd minute, RIFC midfielder Zachary Herivaux was issued a yellow card.

After the initial 45 minutes, the match entered halftime level at 0-0.

The second half began with RIFC starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into Loudoun’s defensive third.

In the 51st minute, Loudoun United midfielder #4 Tommy McCabe was issued a yellow card.

Loudoun had the first chance of the second half when forward #14 Zach Ryan’s effort was palmed over the bar by goalkeeper Koke Vegas.

In the 61st minute, both sides made changes. RIFC head coach Khano Smith replaced forward Mark Doyle with midfielder Jack Panayotou. Loudoun United head coach Ryan Martin replaced forward #14 Zach Ryan with forward #7 Wesley Leggett.

Loudoun’s next chance came in the 64th minute when a corner kick delivery struck the post and was deflected away for yet another corner kick.

In the 67th minute, Loudoun United head coach Ryan Martin made his second change of the match by replacing forward #30 Abdellatif Aboukoura with forward #9 Thomas Williamson.

Just 3 minutes later, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his second change by replacing midfielder Stephen Turnbull with midfielder Joe Brito.

RIFC’s next chance came in the 78th minute when JJ Williams effort from 8-yards out was sent over the bar.

In the 84th minute, RIFC head coach Khano Smith made his third and final change by replacing midfielder Marc Ybarra with midfielder Kofi Twumasi.

Just five minutes later, in the 89th minute, Loudoun United head coach Ryan Martin made his three final changes of the match by replacing forward #8 Florian Valot, midfielder #12 Drew Skundrich and defender #2 Keegan Hughes for forward #15 Riley Bidois and midfielders #10 Kalil Elmedkhar and #44 Isaiah Johnston.

Loudoun’s last major chance came in the 91st minute when defender Grant Stoneman denied a Loudoun forward in the area and then a strike by defender #3 Keegan Tingey was saved away by Koke Vegas.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded with Rhode Island drawing 0-0 with Loudoun United FC.

With the result, RIFC remain in 5th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.

Rhode Island FC (11-14-7, 47 pts.) are on the road to face Charleston Battery (17-9-6, 60 pts.) at Patriots Point. The match kicks off on Saturday, October 19th at 7:30p.m. on ESPN+.
