England player ratings from third Test defeat against India

0

England suffered the embarrassment of being beaten inside two days by India as Joe Root’s men slipped to a ten-wicket defeat in Ahmedabad in what was the seventh shortest Test Match of all time.

A wicket which turned from ball one caused England all sorts of problems with many of the tourist’s batsmen struggling to make any form of impact, Zak Crawley’s first innings apart.

Here are our player ratings from the third Test Match of the season.

Zak Crawley – 6

A very mixed Test for the England’ opener. He scored a majestic in the first innings, scoring nearly half of his side’s score but fell for a golden duck second time around but having not played for a couple of months due to injury, you can cut him some slack for his 2nd innings showing.

Dom Sibley – 3

The Warwickshire man struggled throughout, firstly being dismissed for a duck in the first innings before hitting seven second time around. He did look to be building a strong partnership with Root before playing a needless shot which was ultimately his downfall on this occasion. Will be under pressure for his place with Rory Burns missing this match.

Jonny Bairstow – 0

Bairstow’s worst game in an England shirt. He was drafted back into the side because of his ability against spin but he failed to score a single run and faced just three balls in the whole match. A game to forget for the Yorkshireman who will be under serious pressure if selected for the final match of the series.

Joe Root – 7

A tough one. Root, like many England players struggled with the bat scoring just 39 runs in the game but did look good in the time he spent at the wicket. The rating goes up because of his bowling, taking figures of just 5-8, his best ever in all forms to give his side a slight hope which was quickly diminished. A tough game for the skipper.

Ben Stokes – 4

He is really struggling to make an impact in this series with the bat with Ravi Ashwin having one over him although a score of 25 was one of the better innings from the all rounder in recent times. His bowling still looks well off the pace and something he needs to work on in the week’s gap between matches.

Ollie Pope – 3

Another tough game for the youngster. scoring just a combined 13 runs across both innings as well as dropping a sitter in the gully region. Ashwin has one over him like Stokes and really needs a score to take some pressure of his shoulders with some big series on the horizon.

Ben Foakes – 6

One of England’s better performers in the match. Managed to soak up some time at the crease without necessarily scoring too freely. His keeping was once more strong and looks in his element behind the stumps in an England shirt. Big game for him in the final match.

Jofra Archer – 2

A tough game for Archer. Bowled just five overs in the whole game but did pick up one of only two wickets to fall to seam. He batted at eight, in truth that was at least two spaces too high. A difficult match to deal with, having really little affect on proceedings.

Jack Leach – 8

England’s best player of the match. His bowling is constantly improving game on game and he is really looking a star in the team and is the long-term first choice spin option. He also hit a six in England’s second innings which gains an extra mark.

Stuart Broad – 3

A real struggle for Broad, much like Archer, a passenger in truth. He bowled just six overs in the game but did last a little bit of time with the bat before being dismissed by Axar Patel after facing 29 balls.

James Anderson – 5

Was England’s best seamer in the match, his spell on the second morning helped to put pressure on the Indian ‘batsman before the spinners did their job. Another tough game but Anderson was the standout of the England pacemen.

England are back in action next Thursday for the fourth and final Test which will start at 4:00am GMT.
