Manchester City and Liverpool are fighting tooth-and-nail for the 2018-19 Premier League title and it appears as though the title race will go right to the wire.

Currently, City lead Liverpool by a point. This means that the title will be decided on the final day provided both teams win the rest of their games.

A point total of above 85 (Liverpool’s current tally) has been enough to win the Premier League on multiple occasions. This level of competition is unprecedented in the Premier League. Therefore it might all come down to one moment of genius.

In the game between Chelsea and Liverpool we might have witnessed one such moment. Could Mohammed Salah’s strike against Chelsea push them on to fight harder for the title?

Simply Wow!

Liverpool opened the scoring with a Sadio Mane goal. A slick passing move inside the Chelsea box before Henderson crossed the ball to the far post for Mane, who was unmarked, to head home from close range. This goal surely must have dealt a blow to Chelsea’s moral. But Salah’s wonder-strike just two minutes after the opening goal sunk their spirits completely. Three Chelsea fans had been caught on video singing a racist chant  directed at him. To his credit, he kept his celebrations appropriate realising perhaps that such morons are a small minority of Chelsea fans.

Salah received the ball on the right flank then cut inside on his left foot and unleashed a strike so powerful it flew like a bullet into Kepa’s net. Jurgen Klopp was lost for words to describe the goal and all he could say was Wow, brilliant!

Anfield faithful have confidence in this team

Liverpool fans have backed their team to win the title since the first few matches. But with moments of brilliance like the one by Salah is witnessed that belief must have strengthened manifold. The fans will now be assured that come what may until there are players like Salah in the team it will not stop fighting. It has been revealed that even Manchester United great Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Liverpool will win the title. Salah’s goal has further enhanced their chances.

Remembering season-defining goals from the past

Three remarkable goals come to mind in terms of turning a team’s fortunes. The first of them is Cantona’s strike against Newcastle in the 1996 season. That season Newcastle had a massive lead on second placed United. But Cantona’s strike which defeated the Geordies struck a psychological blow and is still remembered as the turning point in the title race.

On the final day of 2011/12 season United had played their game and waiting for City’s result. The teams were level on points and City needed one goal more to snatch the title from United. In comes Sergio Aguero whose injury-time goal at QPR won City their first PL title on goal difference.
