Whittaker nets brace, but Sounders rally to draw

COMMERCE CITY, CO–Morgan Whittaker made his first start with the Rapids since coming in on a club record fee from Middlesbrough and he did not disappoint with two goals. However, Seattle would come back from two goals down to draw the Rapids 3-3 and get their fifth straight draw–though the winless streak for the Sounders is now thirteen. The Rapids remain seventh in the Western Conference with the result.

Whittaker opened his Rapids account in the 28th minute one-timing a cross into the box from Paxten Aaronson to make it 1-0 to the hosts. Seattle equalized in the 49th minute with Cristian Roldan heading in a free kick from Albert Rusnak.

Parity would last just seven minutes, though, as Donovan Phillip would score off the rebound after an initial shot was saved following Whittaker’s corner kick. Aaronson and Whittaker would connect again in the 76th minute with the latter getting his second of the night and the Rapids’ third and it looked like the Rapids would get three points.

However, Seattle would start to rally back three minutes later as Dejan Joveljic scored from just outside the box to make it 3-2. The Sounders pressed for an equalizer and got it in the third minute of stoppage time as Caden Clark scored from outside the box to rescue a much-needed point.

The Sounders return home Wednesday to face Real Salt Lake (6:30pm PT, Apple TV), while the Rapids travel to LA Galaxy, next Saturday (8:30pm MT, Apple TV).
