Red Bulls fall to heavy defeat

Red Bull New York suffered a heavy 3-1 defeat to the Philadelphia Union, on Saturday night at the Sports Illustrated Stadium. The Union cruised into a three-goal lead before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting found a late consolation goal.

Red Bulls started off bright, with a couple of attempts at goal coming in the first five minutes. They would be punished shortly after as Milan Iloski gave Union the lead when he poked in from close range and this put Red Bulls in an all too familiar position as of late.

Michael Bradley’s side would huff and puff throughout the first-half but it would be the away side that would come close to doubling their lead.

It was Milan Iloski once again, stabbing an effort towards goal which looked to nestle into the bottom corner before some heroics from Justin Che. The 22 year old defender produced a fantastic goal line clearance to ensure his side head into the break only one goal down.

After the interval, Red Bull New York flew out the blocks. Julian Hall fresh off a new four year contract whipped an effort towards the far corner, striking the post just 10 seconds into the second-half.

However, just five minutes later, Union would have their second. Adri Mehmeti was dispossessed which sent the away team on a five on four break. Danley Jean Jacques played a pinpoint pass in the direction of teenage sensation Cavan Sullivan, who chopped back onto his left foot before firing past Ethan Horvath.

This gave Red Bulls a mountain to climb, and looked extremely difficult to take anything away from this game.

It would be another teenager that found the third goal. Neil Pierre tapped in from close range following Bruno Damiani’s free kick, with it being the 18 year old’s fourth goal in just seven games this season.

Red Bulls would not go down without a fight however, Mohammed Sofo slipped in Choupo-Moting to lift the ball over Adrian Blake and pull one back.

The veteran striker looked offside at first glance, but was kept on by Kai Wagner on the far side.

It was not to be for Michael Bradley’s side, who need a turnaround in form if they are to find themselves in the MLS playoffs by the end of the season.

The Red Bulls will play the first of four consecutive away games when they travel to face the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, September 5.
