In a night marked by homage to the legendary Thorns and USWNT winger Tobin Heath, Portland held on to its advantage via Sophia Wilson’s goal in the 44th minute, adding a victory to the day’s celebrations.

The Portland Thorns remain undefeated at home in the 2026 NWSL Season; they gave up all three points almost exactly a year ago against Kansas City Current during the regular season. It was a tale of two attacking players, one in plain clothes, celebrated for her legendary career, and another, in full kit awaiting kick-off, who is well on her way to building her own.

There was Tobin Heath, the object of everybody’s applause; she finally got a moment at the home of her club, with speeches and the appearance of former teammates. The question was why her name hasn’t been raised to the Thorns side of the Ring of Honor, but I guess one step at a time. Awaiting to go to work was forward Sophia Wilson (née Smith), who has already climbed to Portland’s second position as all-time club top scorer with 56 goals, still a ways from top Christine Sinclair’s 79, but with plenty of time to challenge it. Also, Sinclair is the top-scoring footballer in history, with 190 official goals, more than 40 goals above Cristiano Ronaldo.

The other two women in the story were the absentees: midfielder Olivia Moultrie (Thorns) with a season-ending injury, and Denver Summit Lindsey Heaps (née Horan, Summit), both top players writing the present of US football history.

Pleasantries off the pitch, the game went as the team’s positions in the NWSL table would have us expect. Portland dominated the play and had the most opportunities, but couldn’t get that second goal to seal the result. Denver fought, especially in the second half, and could have dented the locals’ party. Both Portland attackers, Sophia Wilson and Pietra Tordin, had plenty of opportunities and were unfortunate not to have tallied more goals. But come the final whistle, the great through ball sent by Jessie Fleming, capitalized on by Sophia Wilson, stood as the difference between both teams.

Nine games remain on the regular season calendar, and the Portland Thorns are standing in third place, 7 points behind the leader Gotham FC and edged by goal average by the Washington Spirit, the current team in second place, followed closely by Utah Royals and San Diego Wave FC, both at 36 points. Denver’s inaugural season has them in 12th place with 26 points, just 4 shy of the last spot that qualifies for the playoffs, held by Seattle Reign in 8th place.

There are still 24 points at play for most teams, and a lot can still happen, but the season objectives leave Portland with reasons to dream of another cup, while Denver will have to fight from the bottom to reach the playoffs for the first time as a franchise.
