New England Revolution draw 2-2 with St. Louis City SC

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (8-3-15, 27 pts.) drew 2-2 versus St. Louis City SC (5-13-10, 28 pts.) on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium to a crowd of 30,000.

The team started their lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Aljaž Ivačič starting in net with a backline of (left back) Will Sands, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Tim Parker, along with (right back) Peyton Miller. The midfield spots were manned by Matt Polster (left defensive midfield) and Ian Harkes (right defensive midfield), with Carles Gil appearing ahead of them (central attacking midfield). The forward roles were manned by Luca Langoni (left wing), Dylan Borrero (right wing), and Giacomo Vrioni as the lone striker.

Defender Xavier Arreaga and midfielders Alhassan Yusuf & Esmir Bajraktarevic were unavailable as they were on International Duty.

This is Tim Parker’s New England Revolution debut.

The match began with St. Louis starting from the center circle and building out of the back to begin the match.

St. Louis had the first the chance in just the first minute when midfielder #19 Indiana Vassilev’s effort went just wide of the net.

Their next chance came from a header in the 8th minute from defender #38 Jannes Horn that was saved by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

In the 16th minute, Revolution forward Giacomo Vrioni was issued a yellow card.

In the 21st minute, St. Louis defender #38 Jannes Horn was issued a yellow card.

Entering the 23rd minute, St. Louis took the lead.

Following a corner kick delivery by midfielder #17 Marcel Hartel, the ball was headed by defender #5 Henry Kessler past goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič for the 1-0 advantage. This is Henry Kessler’s first goal since November of 2023. He scores his first goal for St. Louis against his former team.

New England’s first major chance came in the 24th minute when Peyton Millers long-distant effort was easily saved by Aljaž Ivačič.

Entering the 27th minute, New England leveled the scoreline.

Defender Will Sands played down the line to find Luca Langoni, who manages to catch defender #5 Henry Kessler slipping. He drives down the field and buries it past goalkeeper #1 Roman Bürki.

St. Louis’ next chance came in the 29th minute when midfielder #36 Cedric Teuchert’s shot was easily saved by Aljaž Ivačič.

Just two minutes later, New England had a chance of their own when Giacomo Vrioni’s effort was saved by goalkeeper #1 Roman Bürki.

New England’s next best chance came entering the 38th minute when midfielder Dylan Borrero’s effort struck the post and was cleared.

Entering the 40th minute, New England took the lead.

Defender Will Sands managed to find midfielder Carles Gil for a simple right-footed finish to take the lead 2-1.

After the initial 45+3 minutes, the match entered halftime with New England ahead 2-1.

 

Prior to the start of the second half, St. Louis head coach John Hackworth made his first change by replacing midfielder #19 Indiana Vassilev with forward #29 Nökkvi Þeyr Þórisson.

The second half began with New England starting from the center circle and quickly advancing the ball into St. Louis’ defensive third.

In the 50th minute, St. Louis defender #5 Henry Kessler was issued a yellow card.

New England had the first chance of the second half when Luca Langoni’s long-distant effort in the 53rd mintue was bobbled and claimed by goalkeeper #1 Roman Bürki.

In the 56th minute, St. Louis midfielder #10 Eduard Löwen was issued a yellow card.

Just one minute later, St. Louis had an unbelievable chance when midfielder #17 Marcel Hartel’s effort was spectacularly saved by goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič.

In the 59th minute, St. Louis defender #22 Kyle Hiebert was issued a yellow card.

St. Louis had yet another chance just 2 minutes later when midfielder #10 Eduard Löwen’s effort was saved once more by Aljaž Ivačič.

Midfielder #10 Eduard Löwen had another chance in the 65th minute that was met with unbelievable stop by Aljaž Ivačič.

In the 66th minute, St. Louis head coach John Hackworth made his second change by replacing midfielder #36 Cedric Teuchert with midfielder #21 Rasmus Alm.

Entering the 73rd minute, St. Louis leveled the scoreline.

Striker #11 Simon Becher had a right-footed strike that snuck into the bottom right corner to level the scoreline 2-2.

In the 74th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his first change of the match by replacing midfielder Luca Langoni with midfielder Nacho Gil.

Entering the 79th minute, drama ensued as New England thought they had won a penalty kick due to a handball. Initially, no call was given, and less than 20 seconds later, midfielder #17 Marcel Hartel scored. The assistant referee called a foul. No Handball was given. The ball was then confirmed a foul, and no goal was given. Very Confusing play.

In the 84th minute, Revolution head coach Caleb Porter made his second and third changes of the match by replacing midfielder Dylan Borrero and forward Giacomo Vrioni with midfielder Emmanuel Boateng and forward Bobby Wood.

Just two minutes later, in the 86th minute, St. Louis City head coach John Hackworth made his third and final change of the match by replacing striker #11 Simon Becher with defender #99 Jayden Reid.

After the 90+6 minutes, the match concluded in a 2-2 draw.

With the result, New England moves to 12th in the MLS Eastern Conference. They currently sit 5 points below the playoff line with two games in hand.

The New England Revolution (8-3-15, 27 pts.) are on the road to Orlando, Florida where they are set to face MLS Eastern Conference side Orlando City SC (10-7-10 37 pts.) on Saturday, September 14th. The match kicks off in Inter & Co Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
