Philadelphia Union Draws Against New York Red Bulls, 0-0

Fans at Saturday evening’s game in the heat witnessed the slow return of the Philadelphia Union’s depleted forces and a draw against the resurgent New York Red Bulls. In past games, the Union’s usually stout defense had frayed at the edges, allowing holes — and goals — that would not have occurred in years’ past. The return of Damion Lowe from Jamaica’s national team surely added some heft, and Coach Jim Curtin opted for a lineup with three center backs (Lowe, Jack Elliott and Jakob Glesnes) to offset New York’s scoring skills.

The three-back lineup also allowed for greater protection of the young backup goalkeeper, Andrew Rick. Rick’s start highlighted the loss of three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Andre Blake, whose absence due to injury surely has been a factor in the Union’s was the most likely factor causing the Union’s extended losing streak. The Union had shifted between goalkeepers Oliver Semmel and Andrew Rick in the last few games, and both had made some poor decisions. But on Saturday, Rick held his own with five saves, including when the defense broke down, and came away from the game with a clean sheet.

The question is whether the draw reflects some momentum for Philadelphia after a string of defeats or whether New York experienced a bad night shooting. New York had 2.96 in expected goals to Philadelphia’s 2.57. Even the casual fan saw New York’s near-miss opportunities which — if on frame — likely would not have been stopped.

Philadelphia now loses the left-footer Jack McGlynn and right back Nathan Harriel to the U.S. Olympic team, while José Martínez will return from representing Venezuela at Copa América 2024. Hopefully, Martínez’s return will help move Philadelphia out of 14th place in the MLS East.
