Revolution II fall 3-1 to Columbus Crew 2

FOXBOROUGH, MA – The New England Revolution II (3-2-7, 13 pts.) were defeated 3-1 by the Columbus Crew 2 (5-2-5, 18 pts.) in an MLS NEXT Pro match on Thursday night.

The match kicked off at Lower.com Field to a crowd of 3,000.

The team lined up in their regular 4-2-3-1 formation with JD Gunn starting in net. In the back line was Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi (left back), Hesron Barry and Eric Klein (center backs) and DaMario McIntosh (right back). In the defensive midfield spots were Lucas Maciel (left) and Patrick Leal (right). Ahead of them in the attacking midfield was Gevork Diarbian (left), Luka Borovic (central) and Malcolm Fry (right). Braedon Smith started the match as the lone striker.

Forward Marcos Dias remained out due to injury

Defender Tiago Suarez is out due to suspension (red card)

Defender Victor Souza is out due to an injury.

The match kicked off with New England starting from the center circle. They quickly elected to launch the ball into Columbus’ defensive third.

New England had the first chance of the match in the 8th minute when DaMario McIntosh’s delivery into the area was met with a header by Braedon Smith, which was blocked away by goalkeeper #13 Stanislav Lapkes.

Just 3 minutes later, New England had yet another opportunity when Gevork Diarbian’s effort was met with a diving save by goalkeeper #13 Stanislav Lapkes. The ensuing rebound shot by Patrick Leal was sent wide of the wide-open net.

Columbus’ first opportunity came in the 13th minute when forward #17 Brent Adu-Gymafi’s shot went wide of the net.

New England’s next opportunity came from Lucas Maciel in the 26th minute when his long-distance effort went over the bar.

Just 5 minutes later, New England had yet another opportunity from DaMario McIntosh’s cross, but the effort by Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi was sent wide.

In the 40th minute, Columbus gained the 1-0 advantage.

Following a corner kick delivery, forward #9 Jayden Da rose above Hesron Barry for the simple header into the back of the net.

After the initial 45+1 minutes, the match entered halftime with Columbus ahead 1-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, Columbus head coach Kelvin Jones made his first two change of the match by replacing midfielder #20 Nicolas Jacobo and forward #17 Brent Adu-Gyamfi with midfielders #8 Giorgio De Libera and #43 Anthony Aalouieh.

The second half kicked off with Columbus starting from the center circle and building out of the back.

Just one minute into the second half, Columbus forward #9 Jayden Da had an opportunity, but his effort went over the bar.

In the 48th minute, Columbus added to their lead. 

Following a poor slide tackle, the ball was collected by forward #9 Jayden Da. He then passed the ball square to forward #52 Chase Adams for the simple finish to make it 2-0.

In the 50th minute, Revolution II midfielder Luka Borovic was issued a yellow card.

In the 53rd minute, Revolution II midfielder Lucas Maciel was issued a yellow card for playing the ball after the whistle.

In the 58th minute, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his first four changes of the match by replacing Luka Borovic, Braedon Smith, Malcolm Fry, and Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi with Alexandru Pârvu, Andrej Bjelajac, Joshua Bolma and Gabriel Chavez.

In the 65th minute, Columbus added to their lead. 

Following a 1v1 on the right flank, midfielder #45 Owen Presthus took on Alexandru Pârvu and then found forward #9 Jayden Da wide open atop the Revolution 18-yard box for the right-footed shot that was saved by JD Gunn, struck the crossbar, and deflected off of the goalkeeper and into his own net for the 3-0 Columbus lead.

Following the goal, Columbus head coach Kelvin Jones made his third change of the match by replacing forward #9 Jayden Da with forward #18 Gibran Rayo.

In the 78th minute, Revolution II head coach Richie Williams made his fifth change of the match by replacing Gevork Diarbian with Grant Emerhi.

Entering the 80th minute, New England pulled one back.

After collecting the ball in midfield, Patrick Leal took 3 touches and unleashed an absolute rocket of a shot. Completely unsavable. Into the top left corner to make it 3-1.

Patrick Leal had yet another opportunity just 2 minutes later, when his right-footed chance was deflected wide of the right post.

In the 85th minute, Revolution II midfielder Gabriel Chavez was issued a yellow card.

Just one minute later, Columbus Crew midfielder #18 Gibran Rayo was issued a yellow card.

New England’s next best chance came in the 87th minute when Gabriel Chavez’ effort was met with a diving stop by goalkeeper #13 Stanislav Lapkes.

After the 90+3 minutes, the match concluded with a Columbus 3-1 victory. 

With the result, the New England Revolution II remain in 12th in the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference (8th worst in the entire league).

Richie Williams and the New England Revolution II (2-1-7, 7 pts.) return home to face eastern conference side New York Red Bulls II (4-3-5, 17 pts.). The match kicks off at Oullette Stadium on Friday, June 14th at 7:00p.m. EST on Apple TV.
