Wigan and Wakefield both search for first wins in round two

Round Two of the Betfred Super League continues tonight as Wigan Warriors face off against Wakefield Trinity for their first home game of 2023.

Both teams head into the encounter at the D.W. Stadium in search of their first wins of the campaign after both sides fell to defeats on the opening weekend.

Wigan suffered a shock defeat to Hull KR at Craven Park thanks to a hat-trick from Shaun Kenny-Dowall whilst Wakefield fell under the hammer of the French Giants as Catalan picked up their first points of the season at Belle Vue.

But with Matt Peet priding last year’s success on a huge factor being their impressive start to the campaign, he’ll be keen to get their first points on the board as quickly as possibly with an expected win for the Warriors this Friday.

Wakefield have been tipped by many to be fighting relegation in 2023, and after flirting with the drop for the past few seasons, they’ll want to get some points on the board as early as possible to ensure they don’t prove their critics right and be cut adrift from safety too early in the year.

As for team news, Wigan announced that they have no fresh injury concerns meaning it’s the same 21-man squad that was released ahead of their clash with Hull KR. The squad also means should Mike Cooper be selected, he will be in line for his 250^th Super League appearance on Friday night.

As for the visitors to the D.W., they will be without Reece Lyne who misses out with a ‘medical issue’.

Wigan announced on Thursday that season ticket sales had reached a five-year high ahead of Friday’s home opener and with no sky cameras, there’s a big crowd expected at the D.W. as the Warriors look to kick start their campaign.
